Canada and Other Matters of Opinion $1.99 A cornucopia of comment from Canada’s most opinionated man — a man seen, read, and listened to by millions of Canadians each week.Canada’s most distinctive commentator presents his fearless and thought-provoking views on a head-spinning range of subjects, from Dr. Johnson’s greatness to Bono’s gratingness, from doubts about Obama to utter belief in Don Cherry, from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s outstanding oeuvre to — well, Pamela Anderson. The topics are as eclectic and wide ranging as the intelligence that put them together. The perspective is thoroughly Canadian, and so are many of the recurring topics and themes: of our domestic politics and our military involvements abroad, of our national identity, of human rights and human decency. You’ll find assessments of the reputations of Paul Martin, Conrad Black, Adrienne Clarkson, and Tim Hortons; tough but affectionate views of Newfoundland — of course — but also from Rex Murphy’s constant travels across Canada. But all the world is here, in all its glory and folly. The hard-hitting attacks on politicians, celebrities, those who would ban smoking, and anyone who uses the expression “global warming denial” will have you cheering or tearing your hair out, depending. You will be informed, infuriated perhaps, but always fascinated. |

Excerpt: John Morris (born December 16, 1978 in Winnipeg, Manitoba; nicknamed “Johnny Mo”) is a Canadian curler, and Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic gold medalist from Chestermere, Alberta. As of April 26, 2006 Morris plays third for the Kevin Martin team. Morris, author of the book Fit to Curl is the son of Maureen and Earle Morris, inventor of the “Stabilizer” curling broom. John grew up in Ottawa and at the age of five began curling at the Navy Curling Club. After finishing second at the 1997 Canadian Junior Championships, Morris, who at the time curled out of the Ottawa Curling Club, went on to win the next two national championships in 1998 and 1999, setting records for most wins by a skip along the way. In both those same years, Morris would win world junior championships; in 1998 against Garry MacKay of Scotland and in 1999 against Christian Haller of Switzerland. After living in Ottawa, Morris moved to Southwestern Ontario to attend Wilfrid Laurier University, and curled out of the Stayner Granite Club in Stayner, Ontario. During the 2001 Olympic trials Morris garnered national attention after a difficult loss to Russ Howard when he ripped off his shirt, and threw it in the trash. While in Stayner, Morris won the 2002 Ontario provincial championships qualifying him for the 2002 Nokia Brier. At the Brier, Morris would lose to Alberta’s Randy Ferbey in the final. By 2004, Morris had moved to Calgary, where he played out of the Calgary Winter Club. In 2006 the formerly dubbed bad-boy of curling joined forces with veteran skip Kevin Martin on a four year plan aimed at winning a gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics. On February 27, 2007 just four days before the 2007 Tim Hortons Brier Morris was hit by a car. He was knocked unconscious, but went o… More: |

Excerpt: Tim Hortons Inc. is a Canadian coffee shop known for its coffee and doughnuts. It was founded in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario by Canadian hockey player Tim Horton and Jim Charade, after an initial venture in hamburger restaurants. In 1967 Horton partnered with investor Ron Joyce, who quickly took over operations after Tim Horton died in a car crash in 1974, and expanded the chain into a multi-million dollar franchise. Jim Charade left the organization in 1966 and briefly returned in 1970 and 1993 through 1996. Tim Hortons franchises spread rapidly and eventually overtook McDonald’s as Canada’s largest food service operator. The company opened twice as many Canadian outlets as McDonald’s and system-wide sales also surpassed those of McDonald’s Canadian operations as of 2002. The chain accounted for 22.6% of all fast food industry revenues in Canada in 2005. Tim Hortons commands 76% of the Canadian market for baked goods (based on the number of customers served) and holds 62% of the Canadian coffee market (compared to Starbucks, in the number two position, at 7%). As of September 27, 2009, Tim Hortons has 3,527 systemwide restaurants, including 2,971 in Canada and 556 in the United States. Tim Hortons has an international presence including outlets in the United States, including one opened in Detroit and owned by former NBA player Derrick Coleman and one on a military base outside Kandahar, Afghanistan. Two more outlets are located in military bases at Fort Knox, Kentucky and Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia. Tim Hortons’ other international expansions include a small outlet at the Dublin Zoo.
