The Antioxidant Miracle $13.6 Dr. Lester Packer is a keen proponent of the "antioxidant advantage," the ability of the body to better resist the process of aging and disease when it has the right combination and quantities of antioxidants working together. He and writer Carol Colman refer to this combination as the antioxidant network: coenzyme Q10, glutathione, lipoic acid and vitamins E and C; they all occur naturally in various foods, just not in sufficiently high doses to have the desired age- and disease-fighting effects. The authors show how to tailor-fit the antioxidant network into the diet–covering supplements such as carotenoids (i.e. beta-carotene), flavonoids such as ginko biloba, and selenium–and provide a list of foods where these acids and vitamins occur in significant richness. |

Protein, Protein Complexes (Hardcover) $147.87 Given the immense progress achieved in elucidating protein?protein complex structures and in the field of protein interaction modeling, there is great demand for a book that gives interested researchers/students a comprehensive overview of the field. This book does just that. It focuses on what can be learned about protein?protein interactions from the analysis of protein?protein complex structures and interfaces. What are the driving forces for protein?protein association? How can we extract the mechanism of specific recognition from studying protein?protein interfaces? How can this knowledge be used to predict and design protein?protein interactions (interaction regions and complex structures)? What methods are currently employed to design protein?protein interactions, and how can we influence protein?protein interactions by mutagenesis and small-molecule drugs or peptide mimetics? The book consists of about 15 review chapters, written by experts, on the characterization of protein?protein interfaces, structure determination of protein complexes (by NMR and X-ray), theory of protein?protein binding, dynamics of protein interfaces, bioinformatics methods to predict interaction regions, and prediction of protein?protein complex structures (docking and homology modeling of complexes, etc.) and design of protein?protein interactions. It serves as a bridge between studying/analyzing protein?protein complex structures (interfaces), predicting interactions, and influencing/designing interactions. |

Computational Protein-Protein Interactions (Hardcover) $151.83 Researchers in bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, and similar specialties describe methods for predicting how proteins will interact with each other, for interfering with their interaction, and for designing proteins that will behave in predictable ways. Among the topics are the molecular architecture of protein-protein binding sites, computational simulations of protein-protein and protein-nucleic acid associations, predicting protein interaction sites, intrinsically disordered proteins, identifying druggable hot spots on proteins and in protein-protein interfaces, and designing protein-protein interaction inhibitors. Understanding the Antioxidant Controversy $62.59 Dietary supplement manufacturers, alternative practitioners, and the media tout antioxidants, e.g. vitamin E and polyphenols in green tea, as a virtual panacea against disease. But there are conflicting research results, and even doctors may not know that selenium is not actually an antioxidant. Milbury (Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, Tufts U.) and Richer (dietician, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Farmingham Center) sort the evidence from the hype, reviewing safety and other issues and current understanding of these nutrients` role in immune function. The book includes Dietary Reference Intake guidelines by age group, resources, and a glossary. Annotation )2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) |

Protein-Protein Interactions as New Drug Targets (Hardcover) $600.27 Disease-relevant intracellular protein-protein interactions occurring at defined cellular sites possess great potential as drug targets. They permit highly specific pharmacological interference with defined cellular functions. Drugs targeting such interactions are likely to act with fewer side effects than conventional medication influencing whole cell functions. This book discusses therapeutically relevant protein-protein interactions with a major focus on scaffolding proteins tethering signal transduction processes to defined cellular compartments by direct protein-protein interactions. Recent advances in the development of pharmacological agents interfering with protein-protein interactions are highlighted. |
