$10.28

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The city of Pereira is the capital city of the Colombian department of Risaralda. It stands in the center of the western region of the country, located in a small valley that descends from a part of the western Andes mountain chain. Its strategic location in the coffee producing area makes the city an urban center in Colombia, as does its proximity to Bogotá, Cali and Medellín and to the sea and the biggest airport in the whole area. In 2004 it reported a population of 576,329. The area of Pereira was inhabited, before European colonization, by the fierce Quimbaya tribes. They are famous for their artworks in gold, which are considered among the best productions of pre-Columbian America. The Spanish established their first settlement in the area around the year 1540. The town of Cartago was first founded here by Jorge Robledo and Diego de Mendoza, Spanish conquistadors; it was then moved around 1691 to the place where it is today. Much later, in 1816, the brothers José Francisco and Manuel Pereira took shelter in the area after the defeat of Simón Bolivar and his patriot army at the battle of Cachirí. Francisco Pereira Martinez wanted to found a city on this ground, which had protected him and his brother from the Spanish. On August 24, 1863, four days after his death, the priest Remigio Antonio Cañarte headed a caravan from Cartago, and founded the City of Pereira six days later (August 30) at the spot in the present “Plaza de Bolivar”. In time, settlers from Antioquia occupied the area and established themselves in the city, which then emerged from the condition of an ambitious village. This is part of the Antioquian expansion which developed much of Colombia. Pereira was especially favored by its economically strategic location,

Coffee and Conflict in Colombia, 1886-1910

$23.95

The appearance of Coffee and Conflict in Colombia, 1886-1910, had several important consequences for the entire field of Latin American history, as well as for the study of Colombia. Through Bergquist’s analysis of this transitional period in terms of what has been called the dependency theory, he has left his mark on all subsequent studies in Latin American affairs; questions of economic development and political alignment cannot be dealt with without confronting Bergquist’s work. he has also provided a major contribution to Colombian history by his examination of the growth of the coffee industry and Thousand Days War.

Coffee produced by women in Cauca, Colombia: Where has Juanita Valdez been?

$49.99

In order to meet the demands of a European roaster interested in coffee produced by women, a Colombian coffee cooperative developed a female growers’ program in 2000. Today this program has grown into an association of 390 women. This thesis evaluates how marketing strategies have impacted women’s lives, gender roles, experiences of leadership, and expectations of improving profits as well as individual and communities living standards. In addition, it examines how women have taken advantage of gender equity, female leadership, and empowerment discourses as a marketing strategy. The lessons learned from the successes and challenges that these women have experienced is documented. This research examines how new circumstances and struggles have increased women’s participation in coffee production and how these transformations have opened new opportunities for women in the market. The study is based on interviews with members of the Asociacion de Mujeres Caficultoras Cauca, in the summer 2007.

The volcano is part of the RuizTolima volcanic massif (or Cordillera Central), a group of five ice-capped volcanoes which includes the Tolima, Santa Isabel, Quindio and Machin volcanoes. The massif is located at the intersection of four faults, some of which still are active. Nevado del Ruiz lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region that encircles the Pacific Ocean and contains some of the world’s most active volcanoes. It is the northernmost of the volcanoes lying in the North Volcanic Zone of the Andean Volcanic Belt, which contains 75 of the 204 Holocene-age volcanoes in South America. The Andean Volcanic Belt is produced by the eastward subduction of the oceanic Nazca Plate beneath the South American continental plate. As is the case for many subduction-zone volcanoes, Nevado del Ruiz can generate explosive Plinian eruptions with associated pyroclastic flows that can melt snow and glaciers near the summit, producing large and sometimes devastating lahars (mud and debris flows). Effectiveness of values communication through cross-cultural corporate symbol design.

Effectiveness of values communication through cross-cultural corporate symbol design.

$49.99

Intercultural communication occurs between people whose culture, language, and visual perceptions are distinct enough to alter the communication event between them. In this arena, the graphic designer plays the role of a visual ambassador, creating vehicles of communication intended to carry messages within or across cultural barriers. The task is challenging and necessary because of the contemporary tendency toward globalization. In today’s global market, multinational corporations are creating brands to express their corporate values. As a result, these corporations are more connected to their customers and are differentiated from their competition.;This study tested the effectiveness of communicating values instead of products in the design of a symbol for a cross-cultural corporation. For this study, the existing corporate symbol of a Colombian coffee company was redesigned into three different versions in an attempt to communicate values to a cross-cultural audience. Each symbol was tested by means of a survey completed by participants from different parts of the world who were studying at Iowa State University. The first survey tested the effectiveness of a symbol that communicates values only. The second survey tested the effectiveness of a symbol that communicates the same values when accompanied by a reference to a product. The final survey tested the influence of values perception when the symbol uses a universally recognized icon. This methodology provided a clear idea of the possibility to universally communicate values through a corporate symbol.;The results of this study showed that the corporate symbol which combined product and values had the highest percentage of values recognition. It can also be suggested that by using this corporate symbol redesign, the Colombian coffee company would effectively communicate what the company is and its brand values to a cross-cultural audience.

Geographical indications: Promoting local products in a global market.

Geographical indications: Promoting local products in a global market.

$49.99

This research examines the creation of geographical indications (GIs) for agricultural products as a means of "localizing production" within the framework of globalization. GIs are place-based names (e.g., Champagne, Colombian coffee, Darjeeling tea) that convey the geographical origin, as well as the cultural and historical identity, of agricultural products. In this study, I examine GIs as a potential tool used by local actors to counter many of the negative effects of globalization. GIs are unique, in that they provide a means of ensuring that control over production and sales of a product stays within a local area, but at the same time make use of extralocal markets. Although control over GIs largely rests with local actors, GIs are nested in wider regional, national, and international networks; and the passage from local to extralocal markets introduces new costs and benefits and new relations of power into the supply chain. The degree to which GI protection spurs development and protects local environmental and cultural resources depends in large part on the structure of the GI legislation and the political-economic context in which protection is embedded. I compare two GI production systems, tequila in Mexico and Comte cheese in France, in order to develop a theory of the factors that contribute to more sustainable, equitable GI production systems. I argue that three key differences in the design of the GI schemes help to explain the varying effects of the two cases: (1) supply chain actors' definitions of quality; (2) the way that the GI valorizes the terroir of the region; and (3) the strength and cohesion of the collective organization that governs the supply chain.

The indigenous peoples in Colombia (pueblos indígenas in Spanish) comprise a large number of distinct ethnic groups who inhabited the country’s present territory prior to its discovery by Europeans around 1500.The two main linguistic ethnic groups that dominated the territory now known as Colombia during the pre-Columbian period were the Carib and the Chibcha. They possessed different organizational structures and distinct languages and cultures. In upper Magdalene region, from 5th to 8th century, many tumuli with sculptures were raised in San Agustin. The region now occupied by the city of Bogotá was inhabited by the Muisca. In the modern area of Colombian Coffee-Growers Axis, the Quimbaya civilization existed until the 10th century A.D. Mobile Device For Mechanical Harvesting of Coffee In Steep Terrain

$60.64

Coffee harvesting is done by pickers who selectively detach and collect ripe fruits, one by one, making the labor responsible for almost 40% of the production costs. Since Colombian coffee growers are currently suffering a monotonic growing lack of pickers and economical problems derived of the Colombian peso revaluation, efforts to make this economic activity more competitive are welcome. This research work was focused in improving the coffee growers’ income by reducing harvesting costs via mechanization. This book presents the structured design methodology followed to develop a mechanical coffee harvesting system accommodating the treacherous terrain of the coffee plantations in Colombia and the technical and environmental aspects considered to meet that goal. The methodology followed the Design for Economic Manufacture Philosophy and utilized tools such as Morphological Charts, for concepts generation, and the Controlled Convergence Technique to select the appropriate technology to be designed and built. The resulting harvesting system was named ERGATIS for the ancient Greek word given to the individuals who harvested agricultural products.\

It was the first museum established in the department of Antioquia and the second in Colombia. The museum is located in the center of Medellín on the Plaza Botero near the Parque Berrío metro station. In 1881, a group, including Manuel Uribe Angel, Antonio José Restrepo and Martin Gómez, established the Zea Museum in honor of Francisco Antonio Zea at the Library of the Sovereign State of Antioquia. The first collection contained books and historical and artistic artifacts of its founders. Uribe Angel donated his collection with the condition that he be the first director of the Museum. There was also a library as part of the museum. The history of the department was represented in documents, weapons, flags and other items from the time of Colombian independence to the Thousand Days War. The collection also contained pre-Columbian pieces, rocks, minerals, and coins. The library had thousands of volumes related to history, art and science, and a compilation of the first newspapers in the country. In 1886, the Constitution was reformed and the status of Antioquia as a sovereign state changed to the status it has today as a Department. As a result, entities such as the museum had to depend on the central government and with the Governors. The museum

Excerpt: Angie Sanselmente Valencia also known as Angie Sanclemente Valencia (born 25 May 1979) is a former Colombian beauty queen and lingerie model believed to be the ringleader of one of the world’s largest drug syndicates. Background Valencia is originally from Colombia, where she won the prestigious Reinado Internacional del Café (International Queen of Coffee) beauty pageant in 2000 but was dethroned two days later when it was found she was married. Syndicate Valencia’s operation is believed to be a “rival empire” to that of her former boyfriend, a Mexican drug baron known as “The Monster”. She formed her own cartel after splitting with him. She is alleged to have recruited other models, whom she is quoted referring to as her “unsuspicious, beautiful angels” as drug traffickers, paying them up to around $5,000 (£3,200) per trip to transport cocaine from Argentina to England by way of Cancún . Investigation Valencia’s syndicate was exposed on 13 December 2009, when a 21-year-old woman, “Ariel L”, was arrested with a suitcase containing 55 kg (121 pounds) of cocaine at Ezeiza International Airport , Buenos Aires, Argentina. “L” made no attempt to hide the drugs inside her bags, leading authorities to suspect the ring had help from employees. She is reported to have been told that no one at the airport would try to stop her, and an investigation was launched to find employees of the airport with possible links to the syndicate. After questioning “L”, three additional arrests were made and a warrant was issued for Valencia’s arrest. Authorities believe she may still be in Argentina after having fled a hotel where she had been staying with
