Most people have heard the story of the woman who ordered a cup of coffee from McDonalds, spilled it on her lap, and sued the fast food chain for millions of dollars. The case is often used as an example of the abuse of the tort system in America, but not everyone knows the truth about the case. Stella Liebeck received third-degree burns that required skin grafts after she spilled the coffee on herself while seated in her parked car, and after racking up over $10,000 in hospital bills, McDonalds offered her a settlement of only $800. Liebeck took the matter to court, and it was the jury that found in her favor and bumped the settlement up to $2.9 million, though she asked for significantly less; a judge later reduced the penalty to $480,000. While the facts of the case seem reasonable, public relations firms working for McDonald`s spun the coverage in the company`s favor, and their version of the incident is the one best known to the public. Filmmaker Susan Saladoff examines how major corporations are using disinformation and lobbying power to make it harder for ordinary citizens to use the courts to settle grievances against businesses in the documentary HOT COFFEE, which uses this and three other cases as examples of how corporate power is corrupting America`s legal system. HOT COFFEE was an official selection at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

100 Simple Secrets of Healthy People: What Scientists Have Learned and How You Can Use it

$9.99

The Simple Science of a Healthy LifeFrom fitness to diets to emotional health and longevity, what do people who feel and look healthy do differently than those who are overtired, depressed, or out of shape? Every day we face an avalanche of studies and statistics that tell us what we should or shouldn’t eat, how long we need to exercise, or how to protect ourselves from secondhand smoke and the harmful rays from the sun. Not only are these studies often contradictory, but the actual scientific information is usually inaccessible.Moving beyond the myths and misinformation, the advice in these pages is not based on one person’s opinions or one expert’s study. For the first time the research available on the health of average Americans has been distilled into one hundred essential ways that we can become healthier and happier. Each of the core findings is accompanied by a real life example showing these results in action. Eat more often. Oxford University researchers found that people who ate five or six times a day had a 5 percent lower total cholesterol than average and were 45 percent more likely to be able to sustain their target weight than people who ate once or twice a day.Who says caffeine is bad for you? The majority of scientific evidence shows that, for a healthy adult, moderate quantities of caffeine (about three cups of coffee per day) pose no significant health risks.Home sweet home. People who described their home lives as satisfying were 24 percent more likely to live beyond normal life expectancy, according to a UCLA study.

After going to college, my partner’s father suggested that we create something representative of the area where we live and we came up with the idea of covering natural products such as exotic flowers and plants with gold. I think our creations have a lot of potential. I do not think they will go out of fashion, because people generally love flowers. For the past 20 years or so, I have had good and bad times but I enjoyed it all. It is pretty much like black coffee–bitter, sweet and very nice.’ What is Worldstock? It appeared that their ranch was high up in the mountains and exactly on the Guatemalan frontier line; that they were smugglers of contraband, robbers, and stock thieves—in fact, they were outlaws. But owing to their being related to the local authorities they had always gone unpunished for their crimes. They had killed cheerfully, and being of pure Indian blood were sure of local support. Hemken implored me not to go, and said exactly what he thought concerning my manager. I felt rather thoughtful, and appreciated the manager’s kindness in sending me on the trip. His thoughtfulness in sparing my feelings by not warning me of the character of the trip touched me deeply—so deeply, in fact, that I cursed him heartily, and changed my shot-gun for a repeating carbine, and left for the job feeling slightly less cheerful than I had been. I had a good deal to think over, and I summed it up on the trail. For me to travel round with so much money on me would be clearly inadvisable. On the other hand, the owner of the money would be safe, and therefore he must bring it in person to the town. But I did not see my way to giving receipts, etc. No; only the boss could do that. The mountain trail was delightful. Tapachula lies practically at sea-level, and a two hours’ ride brought me into the foot-hills of the Sierras. Up to now the vegetation was purely tropical, but at about 1,000 feet above sea-level the palms and purelytropical plants gave place to the big forest trees; all round one were coffee plantations, or green clearings of cacao-trees. Far away underneath, the strip of coast country stretches from the foot-hills to meet the Pacific, breaking up into lagoon country, which is a deep emerald

With her acclaimed memoir In the Wilderness Kim Barnes brought us to the great forests of Idaho, where geography and isolation shape love and family. Now, in her luminous new novel, she returns to this territory, offering a powerful tale of hope and idealism, faith and madness. It is 1960 when Thomas Deracotte and his pregnant wife, Helen, abandon a guaranteed future in upper-crust Connecticut and take off for a utopian adventure in the Idaho wilderness. They buy a farm sight unseen and find the buildings collapsed, the fields in ruins. But they have a tent, a river full of fish, and acres overgrown with edible berries and dandelion greens. Helen learns to make coffee over a fire as they set about rebuilding the house. Though Thomas discovers he can’t wield a hammer or an ax, there is a local boy, Manny—a sweet soul of eighteen without a family of his own—who agrees to manage the fields in exchange for room and board. Their optimism and desire carry them through the early days. But the sudden, frightening birth of Thomas and Helen’s daughter, Elise, changes something deep inside their marriage. And then, in the aftermath of a tragic accident to which only Manny bears witness, suspicion, anger, and regret come to haunt this shattered family. It is a legacy Elise will inherit and struggle with, until she ultimately finds a hope of her own. In this extraordinary novel, Kim Barnes reminds us of what it means to be young and in love, to what lengths people will go to escape loneliness, and the redemption found in family.

Had it not been for the bell-ringing and the firing there would have been little to indicate that a great change of government had taken place. Some new faces indeed were seen at the coffee-house, and some familiar ones were missed, for many members of the old Congress who had failed to secure seats in the new had already packed their portmanteaus and hastened home. But a sense of duty kept a few in their seats, and these continued to hold daily sessions…-from “The Constitution Becomes Law”A bestseller when it was first published in 1883, this first volume of historian John Bach McMaster’s magnum opus is a lively history of the United States that is as entertaining as it is informative. Eventually stretching to eight volumes, McMaster’s epic was original in its emphasis on social and economic conditions as deciding factors in shaping a nation’s culture: in addition to the words and actions of great men and the outcomes of significant skirmishes and battles, McMaster indulges his obsession with fascinating trivia, from which fruits and vegetables were to be found in the markets of 18th-century Boston to the cost of books in Pennsylvania before the Revolution.Volume 1, spanning the colonial period to the immediate aftermath of the war with Britain and the establishment of the federal government, is a compulsively readable account of the birth pangs of the new nation, and covers such intriguing and unlikely topics as the debate over the coinage of the United States, the first American ship to sail for China, and the impact of war debts on the fledgling country.American historian JOHN BACH MCMASTER (1852-1932) taught at the Wharton School of Finance and Economy at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, from 1883 to 1919. He also wrote Benjamin Franklin as a Man of Letters (1887) and A School History of the United States (1897), which became a definitive textbook.

This compilation of quotes and quips encompasses just a few years, and was only considered when I looked in my folder one day and saw just how many I had written.Someone suggested to me that I try to get them published in this form, stressing that it might make a good Christmas stocking, birthday, coffee table sort of book-nothing more pretentious than that.I agreed with them, and so here it is.I hope you enjoy these quotes and quips and get a chuckle out of them. Some are more thought provoking than others, but none should result in countless hours of philosophical wrestling or endless questioning of the ethical content. They just represent those few short moments when I put pen to paper, and tried to express my ideas as expeditiously as possible, while attempting to configure them in a context that has that touch of humor in it.It’s something that a lot of us do, whether it be in written words, in art form, or just in casual speech at the dining room table.Life is life. People are people. And some of all of that is funny. In my case, I find a lot of it funny.I find it prudent to laugh at myself before anybody else does. Besides, that way, they can laugh with me, and not at me.So, please enjoy, and I do hope that some of these efforts give you a smile from time to time.

Absolute Certainty of Life after Death

$0.92

THIS IS THE STORY OF TWO MEN. ONE VERY RICH. ONE VERY POOR. THEY BOTH DIED.Most people are intrigued by the subject of life after death. Whether in a classroom, at church, or talking with a friend over a cup of coffee, the same questions are asked over and over again…”What happens the moment you die?”"Where do we go?”"Will we see our loved ones in heaven?”"Do dead people know what’s going on here on earth?”"How can a loving and merciful God send people to hell?”Author Don Wilton looks at these questions and more in The Absolute Certainty of Life after Death, a modern retelling of the Biblical story of the rich man and Lazarus. Africa and the African Diaspora: Cultural Adaptation and Resistance

Africa and the African Diaspora: Cultural Adaptation and Resistance

$19.99

Africa and the African Diaspora is the outcome of a symposium held at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon (February 2002), entitled “Symposium on Freedom in Black History,” designed to celebrate Black History Month. The major themes of the conference were how Africans both at home on the continent and dispersed abroad, often by forces beyond their control, reacted to oppression and subjugation in seeking freedom from slavery, colonialism, and discrimination. The volume documents the many forms that oppression has taken, the many forms that resistance has taken, and the cultural developments that have allowed Africans to adapt to the new and changing economic, social and environmental conditions to win back their freedom. Oppressive strategies as divide-and-rule could be based on any one of a number of features, such as skin color, place of origin, culture, or social or economic status. People drawn into the vortex of the Atlantic trade and funneled into the sugar fields, the swampy rice lands or the cotton, coffee or tobacco plantations of the new world and elsewhere, had no alternative but to risk their lives for freedom. The plantation provided the context for the dehumanization of disadvantaged groups subjected to exhausting work, frequent punishment and personal injustice of every kind,This book demonstrates that the history and interpretation of these struggles of the oppressed peoples to free themselves have not received proportionate attention and analysis, as have other aspects of that history. For example, although Maroon societies or “runaways”, formed colonies of core communities that fought won and preserved freedom in the New World and became the symbol of a special type of nationalism they have never been fully depicted as such in that role in World History and culture. In the discussion of freedom and the activities accompanying it in historical times, we often overlook the minor currents that accompany its attainment either at its in

 An Italian Journey

An Italian Journey

$12.8

First published in France in 1954, Jean Giono’s tale describes his journey to the land whence his father’s people came. A most reluctant traveler, Giono nonetheless discovers a strange beauty not only in such traditional sights as the palazzos and canals of Venice but in people and objects usually ignored or forgotten: wistful waiters, suspicious hair dressers, pugnacious men of God, recalcitrant coffee machines, telescopic umbrellas, and abandoned field machinery. Giono’s world is one where a street gathering that seems to verge on revolution is in reality a stamp collector’s market, and where inept municipal musicians can suddenly offer Mozartian joys.An Italian Journey is also a meditation on the author’s development and a manual on how to achieve happiness. Giono is conscious of Italy’s obvious beauties — the fine monuments, the lyrical landscapes — but his gift is apprehending the joys squeezed from the dark side of life — from dull skies, grim facades, muddy fields, and the tedium of the autostrada. Laden with anecdote and history as well as the author’s exploration of self, An Italian Journey is a masterpiece of travel literature.

 An Unashamed Defense Of Coffee

An Unashamed Defense Of Coffee

$9.99

The first coffee of the day is a make-or-break moment. A robust, flavorful cup can clear the mind, cheer the soul, and boost self-confidence. A watery, bitter brew almost guarantees gloom. More than one billion people start their day by drinking a cup of coffee, making it the most popular drink worldwide, after water, and the coffee industry second in the worldwide economy, after oil. However, most people still consider coffee a guilty pleasure. One reason is that many think coffee contains only caffeine and is detrimental to health. In fact, coffee is far more than caffeine-it contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds that can affect health positively, such as antioxidants, minerals, niacin, and lactones. This book debunks the myths surrounding coffee and proves that coffee in moderation can actually prevent many diseases. Extensive research has been conducted in the last twenty years, but the findings have been relegated to highly specialized journals which are inaccessible to most readers. Now, coffee drinkers rejoice-this book articulates the massive body of research that’s been done in a way that everyone can understand and enjoy! Coffee has been and continues to be an important part of human history-economically, physiologically, and socially. It is the favorite drink of many celebrities and innovators, such as Britney Spears, Halle Berry, Jennifer Jones, Bill Gates, Robin Williams, Kevin Spacey, Jon Stewart, Dave Chapelle, and Madonna, as well as numerous historical figures, like Benjamin Franklin, Napoleon, Lord Byron, Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, Voltaire, Casanova, Goethe, Hemingway, Picasso, Balzac, and Wyatt Earp. There are lots of reasons to drink coffee every day, as the millions of customers who flock to coffeehouses to order a “special,” double espresso or latte will attest. Wake up, smell and read all about coffee. 101 Reasons to Drink Coffee without Guilt provides an accessible, engaging, and illuminating exploration of this beloved beverage.

At Heaven's Gate: Reflections on Leading Worship

At Heaven’s Gate: Reflections on Leading Worship

$8.72

Worship can be a duty rather than a joy, a gathering of the likeminded rather than an encounter with the living God. For those who lead worship, the liturgy can be reduced to a steady progression through a service book, instead of a drawing forth of gifts and ministries from an expectant assembly engaged in an enterprise that joins earth to heaven. This book attempts to answer the question ‘What makes really good worship?’ by examining the chief components of worship, that engages, inspires and transforms. It recalls us to the wonder of worship, and reminds us that when the people of God gather, we come to the very gate of heaven, touching the eternal mystery. How does a visit to the local gate of heaven appear to many people today? Is the welcome warm and genuine? Is there a sense of expectancy? Do the surroundings speak of transcendence or are they full of clutter? Is every minute taken up with words and music or are there spaces when we can listen for God? Is the coffee afterwards worth staying for? Here are simple and good ideas for making worship the transformative experience it should be.

Becoming Metropolitan: Urban Selfhood and the Making of Modern Cracow

Becoming Metropolitan: Urban Selfhood and the Making of Modern Cracow

$35.54

The “Age of Great Cities” erupted in East Central Europe in the last quarter of the 19th century as migrants poured into imperial and regional capitals. For citizens of places like Cracow, discovering and enacting metropolitan identities reinforced their break from a provincial past while affirming their belonging to “modern European civilization.” Strolling the city streets, sipping coffee in cafés, riding the electric tram, and reading the popular press, Cracovians connected to modern big-city culture. In this lively account, Wood looks to the mass circulation illustrated press as well as to supporting evidence from memoirs and archives from the period to present Cracow as a case study that demonstrates the ways people identify with modern urban life.Wood’s original study represents a major shift in thinking about Cracovian and East Central European history at the turn of the century. Challenging the previous scholarship that has focused on nationalism, Wood demonstrates that, in the realm of everyday life, urban identities were often more immediate and compelling. Becoming Metropolitan will appeal to scholars and students of urban history and the popular press, as well as to those interested in Polish history, Eastern European history, and modern European history.

Complete advice is also given on evaluating a carpet, what makes one carpet more valuable than another, and how to take care of a carpet once you have it.Other useful features include a glossary, maps of all major rug producing areas, the history of Oriental rugs and how the carpets are made, etc. Here is the one book you will need to identify, evaluate and purchase oriental rugs.Table of ContentsIntroduction 5History &. Around the turn of the twentieth century, most photographs of Indians pandered to shameless, insensitive stereotypes. In contrast, photographic portraits made by Frank A. Rinehart conveyed the dignity and pride of Native peoples. More than 545 Native Americans representing tribes from all over the country attended the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition in Omaha in 1898 to be part of an event known as the Indian Congress. Rinehart, the exposition’s official photographer, and his assistant Adolph Muhr made more than 500 glassplate negatives depicting Native Americans in their traditional dress, now housed at Haskell Indian Nations University and regarded as one of the best photographic documentation’s of Indian leaders from this era. This book provides an unusual perspective on the Rinehart collection. It features one hundred outstanding images printed from the original negatives made by Rinehart and Muhr at the Congress and over the course of the next two years. It also includes 14 essays by modern Native American writers, artists, and educators–some of them descendants of the individuals photographed–reflecting on the place of these images in their heritage. Beyond the Reach of Time and Change is not another coffee-table book of historical Indian photographs but rather a conversation between Indian people of a century ago and today. Just as the Rinehart collection offers today’s Native Americans a unique connection to the past, this book offers all readers a positive understanding of continuity and endurance within the American Indian community.

If a nation could be said to have a dominant passion, New Zealands would be its landscapes. Images of spectacular natural features pervade the media between the pages of glossy coffee-table books, in tourism promotions and on screen as the setting for blockbuster movies but are these scenes that define its people? For Beyond the Scene the editors asked eleven writers to choose a landscape that was important to them and to write it from the perspective of their life experience and knowledge. From farmer to art historian and film critic, geographer and planner to lawyer, from landscape architect to poet and environmentalist these are diverse voices. Each discusses a very different landscape: from suburban Auckland and rural Waikato to a planned town in Canterbury and much-filmed Otago. Together, they investigate the relationship landscape has to identity, community and psyche.

Donny Deutsch’s hit CNBC show The Big Idea has put the spotlight on that ordinary moment and the people who have the courage and stamina to make their dreams come true. Some people think a big idea is like a lightning bolt striking out of the blue that slams you in the head. But it’s hardly ever like that. The big idea isn’t an act of God. It’s an act of daily life. Simply put, the idea that will make millions starts with an observation.A carpenter gets tired of almost losing a finger every time he slices a bagel. Bam! The Bagel Guillotine. A mother is frustrated that her pantry is full of stale food because the packages don’t close. Bam! Quick Seals. Howard Schultz notices on a trip to Italy that there are coffee bars on almost every corner. Bam! Starbucks. None of them had a barrel of cash. None of them had a ton of experience. They had a big idea and the will to follow through. In The Big Idea, Deutsch draws not only on his own tremendous focus…

A smart, hilarious parody of Malcolm Gladwell’s bestselling book. From The Publisher:Stop! Don’t think! You already know what this book is about. That is the power of Blank: the power of not actually thinking at all. Using what scientific researchers call Extra-Lean Deli Slicing (or would if they actually bothered to research it), your brain has already decided whether you’re going to like Blank, whether its cover goes with your shirt, and whether it will make you look smart if somebody sees you reading it on the train.Chances are you and your shirt are both liking it a lot, you’re going to buy several copies, and you don’t even know why! That’s why you’ve absolutely got to read Blank: to find out why your brain keeps doing these wacky things without your permission. In Blank, a hilarious parody of the number-one bestseller it looks eerily like (and sort of rhymes with) and that your brain wisely advised you to just read a review or magazine excerpt about while avoiding the actual book itself, the brilliantly impulsive and slightly irresponsible Noah Tall explains how people as diverse as General Custer, Roy Rogers, a semi-famous rock star, and the entire New York City Police Department either won big or lost miserably as a result of their minds going completely Blank.About The Author:Noah Tall is a longtime subscriber to The New Yorker and other magazines that people leave on their coffee tables when they want to look smart. He has also been a member of Names, the dyslexic branch of Mensa, since 1598. He is the author of the highly acclaimed national bestseller The Tippling Point, which has yet to be published.

Bloom's Morning: Coffee, Comforters, and the Secret Meaning of Everyday Life

Bloom’s Morning: Coffee, Comforters, and the Secret Meaning of Everyday Life

$15.95

A profound way to understand morning rituals in America. Coffee, comforters, king-sized beds, gel toothpaste, razors, underwear, the morning shower—all activities and objects we have tended to pay no attention to—until the publication of this book. In a series of short vignettes endearingly illustrated by the author, Arthur Asa Berger gives Americans a profound way to understand their morning rituals. Have you ever considered, for instance, that the digital clock, by producing free-floating liquid numerals disconnecting us from both time past and time future, could be interpreted as a metaphor for the alienation many people feel in contemporary society? Or consider our nightclothes: The pajama is the most immediate witness to our sexual activities; thus, we cover our pajamas with a bathrobe to guard against the anxiety of being revealed to other family members. The pajama is intricately connected to human shame. Bloom’s Morning, with 36 short chapters bracketed by brief essays on the nature of semiotic analysis, is a perfect book for the inquisitive mind. It is chock-full of valuable and quirky nuggets from this most interesting of social commentators—items that, taken together, give us a new vision through which to understand ourselves.

What do the discovery of the coffee bean, the invention of the aqualung, the perception of the importance of the size of the moon, the conquest of smallpox, and supersonic flight all have in common? They are milestones in the history of science, a saga that began before the ancient Greeks and one that will continue for thousands of years to come. These and other fascinating stories about the world’s most important inventions and discoveries are featured in The Book of Scientific Anecdotes. This witty, informative, and highly readable collection includes more than sixty anecdotes chosen and edited by science writer Adrian Berry. Divided into eleven sections, the book covers topics ranging from man’s exploration of the world – and space – to the revolution in communications, scientific martyrs, and “bogus science.” It contains a wealth of fascinating, little-known facts and information, and anecdotes about people who have played crucial roles in the progress of science. You’ll learn about Lucy, the woman who lived more than three million years ago, and J.S. Haldane, the only man to have tested safety in the mines by reciting Shakespeare. The scientific achievements of this century – relativity, quantum mechanics, nuclear power, genetic engineering, space travel, jet aircraft, desktop computers, and the beginnings of artificial intelligence – have swept away most of the predictions of the past. What do these breakthroughs mean for the twenty-first century? The Book of Scientific Anecdotes illuminates some of the inventions and discoveries that have changed the world, and the people who made them.”Fascinating.” -School Library Journal

Come share in the rich, Creole Culture of Louisiana, cher! Learn (French Creole) and laugh — with the humorous, Creole characters “Bouki and Lapin” “The Creole Folktales of Compaire Bouki and Compaire Lapin” have a rich and fascinating history, hundreds of years old. The tales originated from Senegal, Africa and according to the historical, Louisiana Creole Plantation ‘Laura’, they were first recorded in the United States – in Laura Plantation’s 150-year-old cabins. Lapin’s adventures (‘Lapin’ means “rabbit” in French) soon went on to become the popular American Tales known as ‘Br’er (Brother) Rabbit’ – only ‘Compaire Bouki and Compaire Lapin’ retain the original, unique French Creole ‘flavor’. (In French folklore, ‘compaire/compair’ means brother.)In various Louisiana stories Bouki is pictured as a donkey, raccoon or wolf. You’ll get to meet ‘Bouki the donkey’, in “Bouki’s Honey”. Bouki was a ‘hyena’ in the original African folktales. The name ‘Bouki’ is a ‘wolof ‘ word – ‘wolof ‘ being both the language and the people of Senegal , Africa – and is said to mean, “stupid hyena”. Some even say ‘Bouki’ is a play on words meaning, “bookish” (something the character never is). It is believed that the Senegal slaves brought to Louisiana, actually told the African-based stories of ‘Bouki and Lapin’ as code, to illustrate victory over the conditions of slavery – with Lapin humorously outwitting plantation owner, ‘Bouki’. Thus we have ‘a bit of history and a lot of humor’, with the colorful tales of ‘Lapin’ – the clever, trickster rabbit, and ‘Bouki’, the slow-witted donkey. Today, ‘Compaire Bouki and Compaire Lapin’ continue to bepopular, French Creole folktales passed from generation to generation — and enjoyed by ages one to 101.*Note: Coming in late 2007-Bouki and Lapin merchandise – t-shirts, coffee mugs and moreat BoukiandLapin.com

Brazil is the first work of fiction to depict five centuries of a great nation’s remarkable history, its evolution from colony to kingdom, from empire to modern republic. With a stunning cast of real and fictional characters, the story unfolds in South America, Africa and Europe. Two families dominate this extraordinary novel. The Cavalcantis are among the original settlers and establish the classic Brazilian plantation—vast, powerful, built with slave labor. The da Silvas represent the second element in both contemporary and historical Brazil: pathfinders and prospectors. For generations, these adventurers have their eyes set on El Dorado, which they ultimately find—in a coffee fazenda at São Paulo. Brazil is an intensely human story—brutal and violent, tender and passionate. Perilous explorations through the Brazilian wilderness…the perpetual clash of pioneer and native, visionary and fortune hunter, master and slave, zealot and exploiter… the thunder of war on land and sea as European powers and South American nations pursue their territorial conquests…the triumphs and tragedies of a people who built a nation covering half the South American continent …all are here in one spell-binding saga.

Bread of Three Rivers: The Story of a French Loaf

Bread of Three Rivers: The Story of a French Loaf

$6

What is it about bread? Why am I, here in the middle of my life, so enamored of French loaves? Two images kept cropping up: two French people sitting in a café for a long afternoon of eating thick hunks of bread and drinking cups of coffee, and a Frenchman on a bicycle with a loaf slung across his handlebars. These visions seemed to depict lives soaked in leisure, where there was time for the good things. . . . Then this thought ambled forth: It’s the dailiness of bread, like a reliable friend. . . . My plan starts to billow forth. My project, as I imagine it, will be a natural history, an ecology of bread. The story of a loaf.Overcome by a passion for French bread, Sara Mansfield Taber travels to Brittany in search of a loaf, which like the lifestyle that must surely accompany it, is perfect in its simplicity. After many months of seeking, she tears off a hunk of pain trois rivières, made by Gold Medal baker Monsieur Jean-Claude Choquet of Blain, Loire-Atlantique. It “smelled like heaven and tasted a mile deep.” It tasted honest. Here was her loaf.In Bread of Three Rivers Taber takes us deep into the grainy crumb, uncovering the four basic ingredients-the salt, water, wheat, and yeast-that when combined by M. Choquet make for a spectacular loaf. We learn of the marshy fields of Guérande where for hundreds of years salt, blessed with a unique mixture of microbes and minerals (that lend their flavor to the bread), has been harvested with the help of the sun. Then we’re off to Moulin de Pont-James to meet the miller, who whispers to Taber that he actually uses strong American wheat from North Dakota to fortify the local harvest. Then to Nantes to engage the organic wheat farmer. In Nort-sur-Erdre we discover an ancient natural aquifer, composed of sand and limestone somewhere between 8 million and 50 million years ago. We end our journey in Lille at the Lesaffre Yeast Company, where the alchemy responsible for everything

Bring It On, Baby: How to Have a Dudelike Pregnancy

Bring It On, Baby: How to Have a Dudelike Pregnancy

$1.99

A refreshingly frank and funny take on motherhood that is not designed to make you feel guilty I have 10 worries, and the first nine are all variations on the theme of labor and “Is there really a baby in there, or just some lizards?”Over the course of the last three years and her first two pregnancies, Zoe Williams has shared her refreshingly forthright insights into impending and new motherhood in her regular Guardian “Anti-natal” column. Whether bemoaning the fact that simply being pregnant seemed to give overbearing people the urge to comment on everything she ate, drank, or wore (I’m drinking coffee and suddenly that makes me an evil mom-to-be. What is wrong with these people?) or inventing elaborate lies to explain why she was late to take her first born for his injections (Perhaps I moved to Italy, but the economic downturn destroyed my prospects and I had to move back.) her commentary is honest, feisty, and—in some cases—downright hilarious. This book will include new material as well as extracts from the columns, building into an idiosyncratic, individual take on becoming a mom—a pregnancy companion with attitude.
