This unique book celebrates a long-term, interracial relationship and details the everyday struggles of a surviving partner trying to carry on in a radically changed world.A Season of Grief chronicles the author’s emotional descent after the violent death of his partner of 21 years. Bill Valentine’s journal of fear, anger, denial, and loneliness captures the glimmers of hope, moments of serendipity, and mysterious coincidences that emerged from his full-time devotion to grief following the death of Joe Lopes. Lopes died along with 264 others when American Airlines Flight 587 crashed in November 2001 in route to the Dominican Republic. It was the second deadliest accident in U.S. aviation history. He is a word always on my lips as I try to work him into a conversation. He is a memory that I strive to keep alive. So yes, in this sense, he is not gone. But in reality, he is. He is gone as my lover. He is gone as my life partner. He is gone as my soul mate, the only person to whom I periodically bared my soul. He is gone as my best friend, the only person to whom I ever attached that label. So pardon me while I still hang on to the notion that he is not here with me. Pardon me while I cling stubbornly to the insistence that he is gone.Valentine’s candid and thoughtful account of his heartbreaking efforts to make sense of his partner’s death—and survive in a world without him—is by turns, funny, frightening, sobering, and surprising. In the nine months following the tragedy of Flight 587, Valentine finds every waking moment of his life affected by his partner’s absence—from mundane household chores to major life decisions. A Season of Grief is a story told in darkness and light, of hurt and healing, love and loneliness, but mostly, of a man who learns to live with his partner’s absence through the persistent, surprising evidence of his presence. Our job on earth is to live with uncertainty, ambiguity, and hope. We are given a

 A World Safe for Capitalism

A World Safe for Capitalism

$27.97

A World Safe for Capitalism unravels a little-known incident: a Wall Street corporation’’s takeover of the foreign debt, national railroad, and national bank of the Dominican Republic in the 1890s. Working with the republic’’s tyrannical president, the American firm tried to turn self-sufficient peasants into cash-crop farmers, with disastrous results. By 1904, the company’’s narrow pursuit of profit clashed with Theodore Roosevelt’’s goal of making the United States a great power, thus triggering a sweeping new policy-the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. Praised by Diplomatic History as a model of globe-trotting multiarchival research, this exciting history covers events in New York, Washington, Santo Domingo, Brussels, and London.

A-Rod: The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez

A-Rod: The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez

$0.99

Alex Rodriguez is the highest-paid player in the history of baseball, a once-in-a-generation talent poised to break many of the sport’s most hallowed records. In 2007 he became the youngest player, at 32, ever to hit 500 home runs, solidifying his status as the greatest player in the modern game, and months later he signed a contract that would keep him with the Yankees through the end of his career. His reputation changed drastically in February 2009 when Selena Roberts broke the news in Sports Illustrated that A-Rod had used performance-enhancing drugs during his 2003 MVP season with the Texas Rangers. Her report prompted a contrite Rodriguez to admit illegal drug use during his 2001–2003 seasons with the Rangers, who had signed him to the most expensive contract in Major League Baseball history. Although he admitted to three seasons of steroid use, the man teammates call “A-Fraud” was still hiding the truth. In the first definitive biography of Alex Rodriguez, Roberts assembles the strands of a bizarre and extraordinary life: from his boyhood in New York and the Dominican Republic through his near-mythic high school career and fast track to the big leagues, the whole of A-Rod’s career mirrors the rise and fall of the steroid generation. In A-Rod, Roberts captures baseball’s greatest player as a tragic figure in pinstripes: the man once considered the clean exception of the steroid generation revealed as an unmistakable product of its greed and dissolution.

Chapters: Hibiscus Tea, Horchata, Aguas Frescas, Tamarindo, Cañita. Excerpt: Aguas frescas (Spanish for “fresh (cold) waters”) are a combination of either fruits , cereals , or seeds , and sugar and water , blended together to make a refreshing beverage. Although they originated and are most common in Mexico , aguas frescas have also become popular in Central America , the Caribbean , and the United States . Some of the most popular flavors include agua de tamarindo (made with tamarind pods), agua de Jamaica (made with roselle ), and agua de horchata (usually made with rice and cinnamon ).It is possible that from these aguas frescas the production of bottled fruit sodas such as Jarritos arose. In Mexico the beverage is often sold by street vendors, but in many cases fine Mexican restaurants will have a good selection of Aguas Frescas available. There is some confusion in terms internationally between the drinks referred to here and bottled soft drinks . In Guatemala and Nicaragua, these are referred to as frescos , short for refresco which in Mexico means soft drinks. Soft drinks in Guatemala are called aguas , short for aguas gaseosas but easily confused with the Mexican aguas frescas .Another type of aguas frescas, popular in Caribbean islands like the Dominican Republic, is made with oatmeal and a citrus juice. It may be made with other ingredients, mainly with liquefied fruits:In Mexico and Central America it is common to find Aguas Frescas in the flavors: item Sour fruits: item With seeds or flowers end{sloppypar See also (online edition) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Cañita (Spanish pronunciation: ) is a brand of aguas frescas launched in 2003 by Eat, Inc. Gustav triggered the largest evacuation in United States history. More than 3 million people fled the oncoming hurricane. It formed on the morning of August 25, 2008, about 260 miles (420 km) southeast of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and rapidly strengthened into a tropical storm that afternoon and into a hurricane early on August 26. Later that day it made landfall near the Haitian town of Jacmel. It inundated Jamaica and ravaged Western Cuba and then steadily moved across the Gulf of Mexico. Once into the Gulf, Gustav gradually weakened because of increased wind shear and dry air. It weakened to a Category 2 hurricane late on August 31, and remained at that intensity until landfall on the morning of September 1 near Cocodrie, Louisiana. Alfonso Soriano: The Dominican Dream Come True

$3.99

Alfonso Soriano came from the dirt fields of the Dominican Republic, playing with sticks for bats and curled up socks for balls, to become one of the most productive and engaging second basemen in history. In 2002, he had one of the most amazing seasons for a second baseman in baseball history . The New York Yankees leadoff man hit 39 home runs and stole 41 bases. He broke the American League record for home runs by a second baseman and became the first second baseman to join the 30—30 club. Soriano led the American League in hits, runs, at—bats, stolen bases and extra base hits and finished in the top five in home runs, doubles and total bases. Alfonso Soriano focuses on Soriano’s superb 2002 season, as well as his journey from the Dominican Republic to Japan to New York City. Featuring interviews with current and former players, current broadcasters and those who know Soriano best, this book analyzes his season from a historical standpoint and takes a look at what’s in store for one of baseball’s brightest stars.

How do wives of prominent men respond when their husbands’ careers are threatened? Will they shed ethical and moral values to protect their men and luxurious life-styles? For twenty-five years Diane, a physician’s wife, monitored the behavior of doctors and their wives. In this small provincial southern town, any hint of an inappropriate liaison or a possible ominous event that might tarnish the reputation of a doctor, Diane and her two close friends, always quietly devised plans to set matters right. Diane set standards of conduct for the common good of all. At the first hint of a dark rumor, she responded wisely and she was brave. A physician, Antoine Oliveir and his wife Shelly, hoping to improve their lives, arrived from the Dominican Republic to take up residence in Diane’s town. Soon, two diverse cultures clashed, eliciting a chaotic response within the medical community. Traditionally, Latinos only served as maids and waiters in this town. Shelly, the daughter of a wealthy and powerful Dominican general, responded with outrage to perceived ethnic prejudices. Dr. Oliveir, his credentials questioned, uncovers the vulnerable underbelly of this tight-knit society, giving him the means to expose scandals that would downgrade the status of the husbands of Diane and her friends. During Diane’s college days, while majoring in political science, she discovered a kindred spirit in a 16th Century book written by the famous philosopher, Machiavelli. He wrote, ” – be on guard lest some foreigner equal in power should enter your city –.” Even though Machiavelli loved his culture more than his soul, Diane’s obsessive admiration for him, guides her in developing a master plan to rid hercommunity of the troublesome Oliveirs. Diane is successful, however, the consequences are deadly.

American Sign Language

American Sign Language

$63.99

American Sign Language (or ASL, Ameslan) is the dominant sign language of the Deaf community in the United States, in the English-speaking parts of Canada, and in some regions of Mexico. Although the United Kingdom and the United States share English as a spoken and written language, British Sign Language (BSL) is quite different from ASL, and the two sign languages are not mutually intelligible. ASL is also used (sometimes alongside indigenous sign languages) in the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Chad, Gabon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, Mauritania, Kenya, Madagascar, and Zimbabwe. Like other sign languages, its grammar and syntax are distinct from any spoken language in its area of influence. While there has been no reliable survey of the number of people who use ASL as their primary language, estimates range from 500,000 to 2 million in the United States alone.
