Costa Rica
Traveling to Costa Rica?

My friend and I are moving to Costa Rica  for about 4-5 weeks. We are curious how many other people have passed through similar situations. We have a friend there and the site plan and almost everywhere we find ourselves. Thoughts?

Most attractions have hostels and buses are very cheap. If you eat food at the grocery store and plan on youth hostels, you can spend about $ 30 per day on a budget. Most hostels charge at $ 10 and some are $ 20 in tourist areas like Manuel Antonio high. Keep in mind that this is the high season. Food in restaurants is fairly cheap, stick to the Casados (Spanish means married) who are “What a married man if he was eating at home. “A full meal with a main dish of fish, chicken, pork or beef and squash, rice and beans, plantains, a salad or salad. On a real budget, buy food at the grocery store. If you want to travel as a tourist and go on zip lines, visit the national parks, a raft Whitewater, etc.. is that all national parks will cost $ 10 to enter, good for all day. Zip lines and are at a minimum of $ 30 per person. Rafting is $ 40 to $ 60. Most of the “tourist” things are expensive since the largest source of revenue in Costa Rica is tourism and the demand is close to exceed supply. If you are camping, most sites allow free camping on the beach, but the chances of you losing all your files are quite high, unless you stay with it.

100 Butterflies and Moths: Portraits from the Tropical Forests of Costa Rica

$17.72

Walking a forest trail in Costa Rica, a visitor might be struck by the sight of an iridescent blue morpho butterfly fluttering ahead in the filtered daylight, or an enormous silk moth, as magnificently patterned and subtly colored as a Persian carpet, only emerging to fly at night. Elsewhere, vivid yellow and orange sulphur butterflies flock to puddles to sip the concentrated minerals. Such is the dazzling variety of the butterflies and moths unique to this region.Gathered by biologists Daniel Janzen and Winifred Hallwachs in the forests of northwestern Costa Rica, 100 tropical butterflies and moths represent the diversity in large-format photographs by Jeffrey Miller that document the dizzying variety of shapes, colors, and markings. The photographs are accompanied by species accounts and images of the corresponding caterpillar. The authors recount these insects’ feats of mimicry and migration, lift the veil on their courtship, and show how the new technology of DNA barcoding is changing the picture of Lepidopteran biodiversity. The authors also tell the success story of Area de Conservacion Guanacaste, where the long-term work of Janzen and Hallwachs, a team of caterpillar collectors, and the participation of neighboring farming communities has deepened understanding of Costa Rica’s Lepidoptera and has brought about advances in restoration ecology of tropical habitats, biodiversity prospecting, biotechnology, and ecotourism development.

100 Caterpillars: Portraits from the Tropical Forests of Costa Rica

100 Caterpillars: Portraits from the Tropical Forests of Costa Rica

$26.5

Every bright monarch butterfly or striking luna moth started out in a far subtler form of nature’s mosaic, a humble caterpillar. It is this early stage of life—crafted by natural selection into machines for converting a vast array of plant matter, mostly leaves, into the beautiful adults that have captivated humans for millennia—that this book brings to dazzling light. Unobtrusive as they go about their business, these caterpillars are rarely seen by humans—and are virtually never seen from the perspective presented in this sumptuous volume: photographed in extreme close-ups at a resolution that captures in sharp detail the exquisite colors and features eluding the casual observer.Gathered by biologists Daniel Janzen, Winifred Hallwachs, and Jeffrey Miller in the tropical dry forests, cloud forests, and rain forests of northwestern Costa Rica, over 100 large-format photographs of caterpillars document the dizzying variety of shapes, vivid colors, and cryptic markings among these species. The pictures are accompanied by capsule species accounts—revealing life histories as diverse as their forms—and magnificent images of the adult butterfly or moth. Throughout, the authors convey an intimate sense of these creatures—studied over twenty-five years—by focusing on how their features figure in their behavior and ecology, and on the beauty of nature in this life stage, as well as the nature of that beauty. The story of the caterpillars is also the success story of Area de Conservacion Guanacaste—where the long-term work of Janzen and Hallwachs, and a team of gusaneros (caterpillar collectors and rearers), along with the participation of neighboring farming communities, has deepened understanding of Costa Rica’s Lepidoptera and has brought about advances in restoration ecology of tropical habitats, biodiversity prospecting, biological control of pests, biotechnology, residents’ bioliteracy, and ecotourism dev

Excerpt: The Clayton-Bulwer Treaty was a treaty between the United States and the United Kingdom, negotiated in 1850 by John M. Clayton and Sir Henry Lytton Bulwer (Lord Dalling), in consequence of the situation created by the project of an inter oceanic canal across Nicaragua , each signatory being jealous of the activities of the other in Central America . Great Britain had large and indefinite territorial claims in three regions Belize or British Honduras , the Mosquito Coast and the Bay Islands . On the other hand, the United States, without territorial claims, held in reserve, ready for ratification, treaties with Nicaragua and Honduras , which gave the U.S. a certain diplomatic advantage with which to balance the de facto dominion of the UK. Agreement on these points being impossible and agreement on the canal question possible, the latter was put in the foreground. The resulting treaty had four essential points. It bound both parties not to “obtain or maintain” any exclusive control of the proposed canal, or unequal advantage in its use. It guaranteed the neutralization of the canal. It declared that the parties agreed “to extend their protection by treaty stipulation to any other practicable communications, whether by canal or railway , across the isthmus which connects North and South America.” Finally, it stipulated that neither signatory would ever “occupy, or fortify, or colonize, or assume or exercise any dominion over Nicaragua, Costa Rica , the Mosquito Coast or any part of Central

Excerpt: Season summary map The 1887 Atlantic hurricane season ran through the summer and the first half of fall in 1887.The 1887 season is the third most-active hurricane season on record, with 19 recorded tropical cyclones forming during the season (tied with the 1995 season). However, most of the cyclones were weak or went out to sea.The 1887 season lasted 212 days (May 15 December 12, 1887), making it the fourth longest season recorded behind the 1952, 1908 and 2003 seasons. When Tropical Storm Nineteen formed on December 7, it made the 1887 season the year with the most off-season storms (five). This final storm was also the only recorded storm to make landfall in Costa Rica .1887 is the earliest known season to produce 13 or more tropical storms. 1887 held the record for the most active Atlantic season for 46 years until the 1933 season broke the record with 21 storms (2005 broke the record later 72 years later with 28 storms). However, prior to the 1960s, inaccuracies were inevitable since storms or depressions that did not approach populated land or shipping lanes, especially those of relatively short duration, were likely to remain undetected without today’s technology (such as satellite monitoring). He ran on a platform to continue free market reforms and to institute an austerity program, and was elected, in a second electoral round, with 58 % of the vote in April 2002. A Brief History of Central America

A Brief History of Central America

$151.11

Spanning three thousand years of civilization, A Brief History of Central America presents a short but comprehensive history of this often volatile region of the world. It begins with the early pre-Columbian cultures and concludes with the political and economic challenges currently facing the seven nations that share the isthmus: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and PanamaWritten for a general audience, the history focuses on key events and broad cultural patterns that have shaped the region. Special themes are developed throughout the book, revealing a great variety of human experience and exposing the contrasts that exist among the Central American nations, including: — The causes of unity and disunity on the isthmus– Economic pressures on the rain forests from farming and tourism– The fate of indigenous peoples and their cultures since the Spanish Conquest.A Brief History of the Central America is unique in its use of the latest data — such as information on the end of the recent civil wars and the translation of Maya hieroglyphs — and ethnohistoric and literary materials to help readers gain insight into the region’s diverse cultures.

 A Cry in the Wilderness

A Cry in the Wilderness

John the Baptist: desert madman or prophet of God? John is charismatic and controversial. A rugged looking Nazarite, his hair and beard have never been cut and he wears a goat hair tunic. He speaks with authority. His dais is a rocky knoll. Annas, the dethroned Chief Priest knows a secret from John’s past. How and to whom he preaches and baptizes till his death at Macchaerus, Herod’s stronghold in the desert comes with many surprises. There he was, standing on a large knoll above the river’s edge. He had a head of thick black hair that had not felt a razor in years. His body was lean. The veins looked like ropes attaching the limbs together with the muscular body. Coal black eyes expressed his determination of his mission. He wore animal hides and a leather belt with well-worn sandals on his feet. Many called him a ‘desert madman’, others, a ‘desert prophet’. His voice was sharp and there was an air of urgency about him. About the Author Ms Guay and Ms Cook are both RN’s with nursing degrees. They met in the Air Force and have been friends these past many years. They both have attended writing courses and seminars. Ms Cook also has a B.R.E. with a minor in English. She has spent time in Costa Rica as a missionary. Ms Cook was a prolific free lance published writer for many nursing and medical magazines. Ms Guay has a life long love of ancient Middle Eastern history and archeology of the Paletine. Her library includes many of her past readings and was fortunate to have access to many fine libraries for further reading and research. Ms Guay has been published in various anthologies and on the web.

A News Correspondent Goes Sailing

$57.27

A News Correspondent Goes Sailing is a book about a sailing trip the author took after retiring from ABC Network News. In each chapter of the book, not only is the sailing adventure described, but the author also reminisces about some of the major news stories he covered as a broadcast journalist. The sailing trip began in October, 1997, and seven months later the sailboat, a Catalina 42 sloop, arrived in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. There were stops in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Cartagena, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Gary Shepard recalls such news assignments as the student rebellion in Beijing, China; the Vietnam War; President Bushas drug war meeting with heads of state in Cartagena, Colombia; the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, Pennslvania; the young California gray whales strapped in the ice off Barrow, Alaska; and the first Persian Gulf War from Baghdad, Iraq.

Known for speaking his mind and fighting for freedom. Nicholas Gagnier doesn’t disappoint in his first piece of work, “A PEACE of My Life.” Nicholas realizes he’s just an ordinary person but not living an ordinary life. When he left the United States for the first time on his 20th birthday. It was March 30th, 2003; only days after the second Iraq War (World War 4? 19?) had begun. Traveling across Europe for 106 Days, his journal accompanied him, and documented his incredible experiences. As his eye opening and life changing moments occurred they sparked and fueled his creative purpose. In his first publication, Nicholas Gagnier shares his journey of dynamic adventures of excitement, love, & PEACE with his readers through the passages of his European journal. When Nicholas returned home to the United States of America, he had a yearning for political change, and an inspiration for creativity. During the summer of 2005, in Manchester Tennessee, at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Nicholas’ filming aspirations took off. With the United States of America falling into tyranny under President George W. Bush, Nicholas’ involvement in political activism grew larger. He couldn’t and wouldn’t be content anymore. He had choices to make. Throughout Nicholas’ fight for freedom & liberty in America, his desire for creating films continued as his political beliefs brought him closer to the political structure and a 2008 Presidential Candidate for the United States of America.. As time manifested Nicholas Gagnier becomes more philosophical and poetic about his life and the current world. When he embarks to Costa Rica years later, he realizes he may never return home.

Aboveground biomass and ecosystem carbon pools in tropical secondary forests growing in six life zones of Costa Rica.

Aboveground biomass and ecosystem carbon pools in tropical secondary forests growing in six life zones of Costa Rica.

$49.99

Carbon sequestration in tropical secondary forests growing in all climates must be quantified to understand their potential role in adaptation and mitigation strategies of global climate change. Total aboveground biomass (TAGB), soil carbon, and total ecosystem carbon (TEC) were measured in 54 secondary forests growing along a broad bioclimatic gradient of 6 life zones, from lowland Dry to Premontane Rain forests in Costa Rica. The potential of regenerating secondary forests to offset carbon losses due to climate change-mediated primary forest degradation into the year 2100 was also determined.;TAGB ranged from 12 Mg·ha-1 (5 MgC·ha -1) in a 9-yr Dry forest to 298 Mg·ha-1 (143 MgC·ha-1) in a 60-yr Wet forest. TAGB and carbon were correlated with forest age and the ratio of potential evapotranspiration to precipitation. Secondary forests were predicted to reach TAGB ≥ 90% of that in primary forest in 35 to 126 yrs. Mean soil carbon to 1 m ranged from 127 to 278 Mg·ha-1 in the Dry and Premontane Rain life zones. There was no correlation of soil C pools with age.;TEC was as high as 440 Mg·ha-1 in a 40-yr Premontane Rain forest. Maximum rates of TEC sequestration were highest (14–33 Mg·ha-1·yr-1) in life zones with intermediate levels of precipitation and lowest (7 and 12 Mg·ha -1·yr-1) in the Dry and Premontane Rain life zones. Secondary forests were predicted to attain ecosystem C levels similar to that of primary forests in 44–105 yrs.;Based upon simulations of forest growth and the changing land area covered by differing life zones due to climate change, carbon losses from primary forests ranged from < 6 to 65 Tg under two different climate change scenarios for the year 2100. Secondary forests would need to cover 19% of each life zone to offset the larger flux of carbon into the atmosphere. Our modeling did not include additional carbon losses associated with changing disturbance regimes

Secondary issues—doing laundry, showering, sleeping, leading a normal social life—are all pushed down the priority list as she slaves away to meet the deadline. Vanessa, on the other hand, has more time with her male colleagues than she cares to deal with. An unfortunate effect of being a part of the smallest archeological expedition she’s ever heard of is that if she doesn’t get along with her boss and the intern, she’s out of luck. Her boss refuses to bring in more help, so Vanessa is stuck with the two of them and the over-sexed bartender at the local watering hole as her only romantic prospects. The future does not look bright in sunny Costa Rica. Valentine’s Day looks dismal and lonely for both women. Anya manages to pull herself together in the nick of time, but not without making a complete fool of herself in front of the Mail Express deliveryman. Again. Her one consolation is that she finished in time to experiment with the next set of jewels from Vanessa. This time, she finds a pair of amethyst earrings that whisk her away to the home of an affluent Greek statesman. Once more naked and alone in a strange time and place, Anya is mistaken for a renowned courtesan. She has to think quick when the deception is discovered, or face the anger of an Athenian noble.

Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica: A Herpetofauna Between Two Continents, Between Two Seas

Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica: A Herpetofauna Between Two Continents, Between Two Seas

$55

World renowned for its biological diversity and model conservation system, Costa Rica is home to a wide variety of amphibians and reptiles, from the golden toad to the scorpion lizard and the black-headed bushmaster. Jay M. Savage has studied these fascinating creatures for more than forty years, and in The Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica he provides the most comprehensive, up-to-date treatment of their biology and evolution ever produced.Savage begins with detailed discussions of the natural and cultural history of Costa Rica, setting the stage for a detailed treatment of each of the 396 species of amphibians and reptiles that may be found there. Each species account synthesizes and analyzes everything that is known about the animal’s anatomy, behavior, geographic distribution, systematics, and evolutionary history and provides keys for identifying amphibians and reptiles in the field. In addition to distribution maps and systematic and morphological illustrations, the book includes color photographs of almost every known species, many taken by the distinguished nature photographers Michael and Patricia Fogden.Because Costa Rica has played, and continues to play, a pivotal role in the study of tropical biology as well as in the development of ecotourism and ecoprospecting, and because more than half of the amphibians and reptiles in Costa Rica are also found elsewhere in Central America, The Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica will be an essential book for a wide audience of nature lovers, naturalists, ecotourists, field biologists, conservationists, and government planners.

To those who have carried out research at La Selva, as well as for the serious layperson or even a first-time ecotourist, this book will be a delight. Guyer and Donnelly have been carrying out research at La Selva for more than 25 years and have contributed much new information on the lives of these animals. A great strength is the series of keys based primarily on live coloration for rapid and accurate identification in the field. The added value is that the book covers 90% of the amphibians and reptiles found in the Caribbean lowlands from northeastern Honduras to and including Bocas del Toro Province, Panama. In sum, my words for this book are: ‘Mighty Fine’! –Jay M. Savage, author of The Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica A 40-year intensive look, precisely what we all wished we had had when we first stepped into the Neotropical rainforest.
