Female Prostitution in Costa Rica

Female Prostitution in Costa Rica

$54.95

This book analyzes the development of female prostitution in the Pacific port of Puntarenas, Costa Rica during the advanced stage of the coffee exporting economy (1880-1930), at the height of the consolidation of the liberal state. Hayes argues that prostitution in the port differed from that of the coffee producing highlands due to differential economic, social, and political development. In the periphery of Puntarenas, the development of prostitution reflected a less stigmatized view of sexual commerce than that of the highlands, where prostitution, although legal, threatened the tenets of liberal nationalism based on racial homogeneity and family values. Women of the highlands were encouraged to reproduce the nation’s “more European” stock of workers and to ensure the legal transference of property through legal church marriages – both part of a design to stabilize the coffee exporting project. By contrast, prostitutes and other working women of Puntarenas, many immigrants from the “less European” populations of neighboring regions and most in concubinage, were freer to do what the law prescribed – register as prostitutes in legitimate trade. Such regional disparities reveal weaknesses in traditional explanations of Costa Rican exceptionalism, which have rested on the premise of cultural homogeneity and have reflected the realities of only one region of the country. The book advances an alternative explanation for the development of the nation’s more democratic institutions, situating Costa Rican exceptionalism in the nation’s free labor system, of which the labor prostitute in Puntarenas provides an example.

Costa Rican Decaffeinated Ground (12 oz)

Costa Rican Decaffeinated Ground (12 oz)

$13.95

Some people would argue that decaf coffee isn’t even really coffee, however, we think you’ll beg to differ after trying our decaf. This coffee is a special “Mezcla de la Casa” or “House Blend”, which is a mix of the harder, acidic beans of the Central Valley and dense, full-bodied beans of the Western Valley, which make the perfect combination of beans for a decaf. After purchasing the beans for this blend from local growers, we transport them to Veracruz, Mexico where they undergo the “indirect water method” decaffeination process that eliminates 99.9% of the caffeine without compromising on flavor. The beans are first ‘washed’ by infusing them with water vapor, and then washed a second time with the same water to restore any flavor that may have been ‘lost’ during the first washing. In this way, we are retaining as much of the flavor as possible, something you may not find in other decaf coffees. At the conclusion of the process, the beans are returned to our roastery here in Costa Rica where we carefully roast the beans to bring out their optimum flavors. Decaf blends have a reputation for being bland and plain, however our Costa Rica Decaf is anything but. Despite the dark roast required to coax the flavors out of decaffeinated beans, this blend is mild, with a light acidity. Its flavor is balanced and light-bodied, perfect for coffee drinkers who are sensitive to caffeine. Its unique aroma of seeds and dry leaves is complemented by the flavor notes of honey and clove. Perfect for enjoying on a quiet evening.

Costa Rican Espresso Ground (12 oz)

Costa Rican Espresso Ground (12 oz)

$12.95

There are two main methods by which we enjoy coffee: infusion and extraction. Infusion is what occurs when you brew coffee, allowing the grounds and water to fuse together. Extraction however, is the much more scientifically delicate process of creating a coffee whose best flavors can be extracted and enjoyed in a matter of seconds. In order to create the perfect espresso though, premium beans with specific qualities are paramount. Using a house blend of plump, premium beans from the Central and Western Valley regions of Costa Rica, we ve concocted a mildly acidic espresso that yields a rich and foamy crema. As our darkest roast, the flavor notes of dark chocolate are undeniable. Coupled with undertones of apple and wildflowers and aromas of fruit, lightly toasted bread, and caramel, it s no wonder why this blend is one of our best sellers, not only in the US but also in local coffee shops around Costa Rica. After our creation of the Costa Rican Dark and Light Roasts, we roasted a small amount of espresso to introduce to the Costa Rican public. At the time, the espresso scene was more limited to Italy and Europe and because of this, there were few coffee shops around San Jose that had a machine and could prepare an espresso. Not letting this deter us, we took it upon ourselves to teach the Costa Rican public to prepare, drink, and enjoy espresso and to this day, you will find well-known coffee shops using our espresso blend for their caf drinks. We are confident the experienced and dabbling coffee drinkers alike will be pleasantly surprised at how smooth and enjoyable our espresso blend is.

The beans we purchase for our Fair Trade blend are harvested exclusively on the Altamira de Boilley plantation, located in the Brunca region of Costa Rica. This plantation is owned and operated by ASOPROLA, a community of women that are using sustainable farming practices to show the world that with a little creativity and a great product (their coffee beans), it’s possible to sustain a living in an environmentally-friendly way. The community relies completely on the proceeds they earn from coffee harvesting, as well as from accommodating travelers in their Rural Lodge, situated close to the plantation. Travelers from all over can come, stay, and learn about the productive and organizational practices that support economic and environmental stability not only for the community, but also throughout the whole region. It is our pleasure to be able to not only invest in the lives of the women of ASOPROLA, but also to offer our customers an exceptional coffee. The Brunca region of Costa Rica is known for producing a thick bean with excellent aroma, body and acidity, which perfectly describes our Fair Trade blend. Our blend is dark-roasted and has a pleasant aroma of fresh wood and flavor notes of wildflowers, apple, and laurel. This is a full-bodied coffee that has a heavier presence in the mouth and a long finish on the palate. One of the most important aspects of this blend is that it is 100% Fair Trade Certified, meaning ASOPROLA meets international standards of working conditions and in turn, we compensate them with above-market prices. This not only supports the ASOPROLA community but also fosters earth-friendly agricultural practices and contributes to their security and economic self-sufficiency. Costa Rican Light Roast Ground (12 oz)

Costa Rican Light Roast Ground (12 oz)

$12.95

Made from a special house blend of Central and Western Valley arabica beans, this light roasted coffee has noticeable fruity and floral notes. Because the Central Valley’s beans are grown at high altitudes, they are higher in acidity – a quality that brings out the best aromatic characteristics of a coffee. For this reason, you will notice an aroma of freshly sliced limes that is coupled with a tart acidity upon the first sip. The flavor notes include caramel and apricot and even sometimes a hint of malt. Soft, well-balanced and full-bodied, this light roast accentuates the best qualities of the blend of beans and makes for an ideal morning cup. This is a ’sophisticated’ blend that will maintain its flavor from start to finish.
