Thiruvalla-Land of legends

Sanjai VELAYUDHAN

INTRODUCTION:

Thiruvalla is a town in Pathanamthitta district in the beautiful Kerala. The city covers a geographical area of 27.94 sq km. Port and the nearest airport is in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram city is located at a distance of 130 Kms. The city has a tropical climate with temperatures ranging from a high of 34.4 ° C in summer to a low of 18.5 ° C in winter rainfall of 3040 mm in good health. The place is associated many legends and religious myths (mainly Hindus followed by Christian) that make it an important center of religious beliefs in Kerala. Apostle Jesus, St. Thomas who arrived at Kodungallur is supposed to have visited Niranam in Thiruvalla in 53 AD He erected a cross and has founded and built church. It is a building of some that is involved in this church here. It has large granite cross in front of the church. Thiruvalla is adjacent to the crucible of Christianity in Kerala (The locations near as Changanasherry, Kottayam etc. are known to be strong centers of Christianity). The battle for the layman also spilled over into the ground and predominantly Hindu. It is also the site of the famous Royal Palace architecture and Web-Nedumpuram Paliakkara Palace. A visit to Thiruvalla will not be complete without the purchase of a pair of bronze figurines artistic "Mannar".

Snapshot:

One of the oldest inhabited places, there is much evidence to suggest that the region has been inhabited since 500 BCE although the city was founded around 800 CE. The current areas of Niranam Kadapra and on the western part of Thiruvalla emerged from the sea at this time.

Many ancient manuscripts and scrolls (Thalli ola archival etched on palm leaves), as Shasanas and the Granth mentions about Thiruvalla, but by different names: "Thiruvattuvai", "Thiruvallavazhu," Nalla Vai "," Mallikavanam. According to legend, the name derives from Thiruvalla word "Thiru Vazha Valla", named after the river Manimala. He was known as Puzha Valla, Thiruvalla suggesting that was at the mouth of the river Manimala and hence was known as Valla vai (Valla vai boat and could mean in Malayalam means mouth) loosely defined as the vessel is from and where the landing happens. Because of this temple of the iconic Sri Vallabha Temple in Thiruvalla has been called "Thiru Vallavayappan" which later reform as "Sri Vallabhan temple" Thiru Vallabha, considering that the deity is Vishnu. This temple is one of the one hundred and eight Vaishnava Thirupathi India. Another version says that the name comes from the old name "Valla vai". On the western part of Thiruvalla, where the rivers Pampa, Manimala Achen Kovil join and offers a panoramic view. As in many other places in India, culture and heritage of Thiruvalla are mainly related to its temples. Historical evidence, including the copper plates and identifies the royal proclamations Thiruvalla as a development and a spiritual center and the importance of education in 1100 CE. The Temple Sree Vallaba governed a Vedic School with one thousand students and a hundred teachers. The leaders of Thiruvalla belonged to the dynasty Thekkumkoor, who had a seat close to his Edathil Kaavil Temple.

Former Kaavil market was once one of the most famous department stores in Kerala who had links to commercial links foreigners. The market was actually Kaavil located in the street from the temple Temple Erankavu Kaavil in this Kavumbhagom. It has also been the first settlement area of the first Christians Thiruvalla. This has been cited in the Malayalam Poem Iconic "Unnuneeli Sandesham. It was the epicenter of Thiruvalla until the 19th century. It should be noted that virtually Thiruvalla was not under the direct authority of the British and until the independence of India from Great Britain was governed by the Travancore dynasty.

One reason for glory Thiruvalla is for its diaspora. It has a large number of non-resident Indians community. Most of its financial muscle is derived from their remittances. Despite its small size, most major banks have branches here. It is also known for the influence of Christian missionaries to eat in the majority population Hindu. It's already solid reputation in education and was stimulated by the arrival of missionaries and many schools started by them around the area with the active promotion of education by the royal family of Travancore. Thiruvalla no big. small and large educational institutions, including a private medical college. It has a high literacy rate exceeds 90% and once as having the greatest number of graduates universities throughout India.

More than Islam, Christianity has a greater presence here after Hinduism. Presence of Christianity is strong here with the seat of the Mar Thoma Church, the Evangelical Church and the Indian Pentecostal Church of God (IPC) located in and around Thiruvalla. The seat of the Diocese of Malankara Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church Niranam Thiruvalla Archdiocese are also in Thiruvalla. The church Niranam considered the fourth among eight churches founded St. Thomas in Kerala is only 5 km from Thiruvalla.

The famous Niranam, Paliakkara Church Kallooppara Valiyapalli Parumala and churches are major tourist destinations. Despite the presence well funded Christian churches, the ancient inhabitants of Thiruvalla always stick to their Hindu beliefs. It has many temples that have their origins rooted in antiquity. One of the most revered and visited the Sabarimala pilgrimage center is located relatively near Thiruvalla. It might be wrong to say that there is no religious undercurrents in Thiruvalla if there are no recorded cases of major religious-violence here.

Myths, legends and folklore ON Thiruvalla:

Most of the myths of origin of Thiruvalla a Hindu background. I chose three different stories (not related directly to the temple) which are intrinsically linked to the history of Thiruvalla.

The Yakshi Pynanarkavu:

This story is also important socio-cultural. Thiruvalla was mainly dominated by Hindus and followers of religions local. This story I think I have been popularized to bring forth the power of the practitioners of the Christian faith that works hard to raise issues of their religion. It should be noted that Hindu social system managed primarily using their "caste system", a hierarchy that has been legitimized by the religious sanction. The oppressive caste system was one of the most powerful factors that have allowed other religions to be rooted in the Kerala and India. Despite the prevalence of this oppressive system, he was still an arduous task for the missionaries to convert local people to their fold. Over time, they realized that local religions were driven by powerful stories and images they evoke and the stories of miracles could be used as a supporting factor to prove that the Christian gods were more powerful than the premises.

Here the story-l'antagoniste history was called The unfortunate Yakshi Yakshi Yakshi Pynanarkavu or Parumala. The haunt of that lady "was the way Thiruvananthapuram-Padamanabhapuram which served as a route for travelers wishing to reach either destination. It was a lonely road winding coursing through a desert area, stabilized and covered by dense forest. The Yakshi be found in this section seeks its source (s) of food. In those days, it finds its victims in large numbers. The path slowly gaining the reputation of fatal road and fewer people have chosen to take this path and Yakshi was left to the decline Yakshi proactive started on men address directly from the villages. Literally, the terror returned and the villagers have taken a defensive position by consulting sorcerers and exorcists. Nothing (traditional methods) worked. The Yakshi continued its bloody bestial. The news of this gap Yakshi far across the country have finally reached the ears of local heroes and legendary Christian priest and the great magician, "Kadamattathu Kathanar. With accents to save the local population as a hero (with accents Dragon Slayer-St. George), he set out to annihilate the creature sucking blood. He sought to and after some days she managed to identify the haunt. It has been open in its usual form of a sensual lady. The Kathanar was also a man captured by the beauty of the event, but did commit. The Yakshi asked some time-slick. It is used to make "paan" is a substance Local mild intoxicant. Prepared for his request, he offered the lime, but a nail of an iron. Fearful of metal (such as legends say bad spirits are afraid of metal items in particular iron) refused to accept the Yakshi and fell. But Kathanar insisted on its acceptance of the lime the nail. The nail has been fortified with a magic mantra, "which had the ability to temporarily deplete his power. Now it was the Kathanar tour to convince and she finally agreed. She faces a loss of tactics of its powers and dark flesh. He hammered on top of his head making him a slave.

To rehabilitate the Yakshi, the Kathanar took her to an old relative of his, she used to live alone Kathanar and assumed that the Yakshi could be a great help to the woman alone. The old lady was delighted and offered to prepare a meal for them. After lunch, the Kathanar took a nap while the old and the young slave girl got to know each other. As was the custom with the women of Kerala (former, course) the lady offered to comb the hair of the young slave. While combing, the comb caught on the nail that the priest had guaranteed causing bleeding. Alarmed, the woman left the nail on the Yakshi and fled.

Shocked by the incident, the woman woke up and linked to the Kathanar the original incident. The Kathanar aware of the seriousness of the situation and ran behind the sense that she had fled. The miraculous Kathanar soon joined-up with her and has increased its pace and finally brought the chase to a place called "Mannar". I do not know why, but is supposed to have taken the boat across river Pampa. The Kathanar was not a mode of transportation, but its evocation of the powers to initiate Yakshi the opposite bank while was unable to move and was trapped. It transversed the river like a surfer on a banana leaf and Yakshi reached the other bank. The Yakshi realized she had met his match and asked him not to destroy it. The Kathanar was the embodiment of love, and he has live as long as it does shed the blood of every human being. It has been ranted choosing a peaceful life in the surrounding forest is known as Pynanarkavu. According to his promise, it is deemed to be living up to the date haunt the forests, but invisible to the eye human. Of course, the comments were cited by many if there are no murders that have been caused by it.

The legend of the ogre Gluttonous – "Bhaken"

It is an old legend and supposed to have occurred when Thiruvalla was known as "Mallikavanam. This story is important from a socio-cultural point. When the Aryans of north India migrated south, it has been nothing less than support because they brought along radically different culture, religion and lifestyle. While these migrations took place in several phases over a long period, it has resulted in a dominant relationship. This entrapment "of events or without a minimum of violence or bloodshed. It was more of a social care leaving the Aryans at the top of the social hierarchy. They used their culture and symbols relegate the original inhabitants of a more subordinate position. However, it should also be noted that, instead to destroy the existing religions and cultural symbols, there was an assimilation of local deities and symbols in the Aryan fold. It was a brilliant strategy that gave the permanence of the Aryan presence in South India. Thus, as this story was originally a sub-story of the Hindu epic Mahabharatha was projected to have occurred in a remote area (then) as a place to absorb Thiruvalla local population in the current Aryan. What we see is superposition of events in a context south. This episode is supposed to have occurred in a place called Meenthalakara was also known as gramam Ekachakra (Village). Bhaken was a greedy ogre who lived in almost Kakkathurithu Amaloor. The Ugly Bhaken was known for his gluttony. It eats anything and what in the village and this has caused significant distress to the villagers. Unable to bear the ravenous ogre, villagers entered a pact with him. According to its terms and conditions basket Buffalo, loaded with food are made daily by a member chosen Bhaken the village. Contrary to the agreement, the ogre would not only consume all the load of food, but also the beast of burden and the man who has been assigned to take the car. Finally account the turn of a Brahmin family (please note here Brahmin) came, they should let their only son to take food to Bhaken. As usual, it was that the family has also hosted the Pandavas (the protagonists of the Mahabharatha) who has recently escaped attempts their lives and lived under a disguise of their enemies, the Kauravas. When they came to know the misery of their hosts, Kunti Devi the mother of Pandavas insisted on sending his third and strongest son Bhima to meet the ogre instead of the Brahmin boy. Bhima who was himself known for his appetite Voracious reached the rendezvous and instead of waiting for the recipient, polished load itself. Naturally, Bhaken was furious and tried to finish off Bhima. Now, as part of the protagonists Bhaken Bhima killed without much noise. The duel itself was done in a historic Thiruvalla. During the duel, Bhima is supposed to have thrown a copper container Bhaken, and the place where he fell is known as "Chembukandam" (loosely meaning the depression left the impact of copper). In the midst of battle, buffalo sank below the earth, and this place is known as "Erumathadam. The place where the ogre was beheaded is known as "Thalapala. The place where the ogre's legs was torn apart and thrown is known under the name "Kalumoola. And the place where the ogre's eyes gouged out have been thrown is known as "Kannadichal. And the place where the testicles were thrown was known as "Urulakunnu" later changed to "Umikunnu. The place has long been Meenthalakara before known as "Bhakenthalakara. Needless to say that the duel was very violent, which also shows the subtle power of the Aryans.

The legend of the Rakshasa Thukalassery or Ogre:

It is supposed to have occurred in one of its villages mainly inhabited mainly by Brahmins (the community on top of the food chain as the caste system in India). The village has also been the residence evil Rakshasa (ogre) known as "Thukalan. As is the nature of an ogre, he disturbs the villagers without end. With no way to defeat the ogre powerful, as is the Indian character in itself, they treated him in their lives and grudgingly learned to live with him. Like any psychopath he started to feel more and more powerful. He then cause trouble for an old Brahmin girl (usually Brahmins and their elders are not in difficulty, in general, because they are considered closest to God. People are even afraid that their curse is very powerful). She did not take the ogre in the wake and therefore prayed the "Lord Vishnu" (presumably the head of the Hindu trinity) to get a respite from the ogre. Again, with nuances that suggests Brahmin domination, it is said that the Lord considered the Old Lady's prayers and he even appeared in the village and killed the ogre using its characteristic weapon, the disk (called Sudarshana Chakra). The chakra flew in a circular and Gathering strength from its spin, beheaded the ogre. Be weapon of the Lord, before returning to the "Sainte-fingers", washed the blood from the River. This place was then named the "Chakrashalana Kadavu "now modified as" Kadavu Chakrashala. The place where the ogre lived is known as "Thukalassery.
