Appetite for America: How Visionary Businessman Fred Harvey Built a Railroad Hospitality Empire That Civilized the Wild West $27 The legendary life and entrepreneurial vision of Fred Harvey helped shape American culture and history for three generations—from the 1880s all the way through World War II—and still influence our lives today in surprising and fascinating ways. Now award-winning journalist Stephen Fried re-creates the life of this unlikely American hero, the founding father of the nation’s service industry, whose remarkable family business civilized the West and introduced America to Americans.Appetite for America is the incredible real-life story of Fred Harvey—told in depth for the first time ever—as well as the story of this country’s expansion into the Wild West of Bat Masterson and Billy the Kid, of the great days of the railroad, of a time when a deal could still be made with a handshake and the United States was still uniting. As a young immigrant, Fred Harvey worked his way up from dishwasher to household name: He was Ray Kroc before McDonald’s, J. Willard Marriott before Marriott Hotels, Howard Schultz before Starbucks. His eating houses and hotels along the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad (including historic lodges still in use at the Grand Canyon) were patronized by princes, presidents, and countless ordinary travelers looking for the best cup of coffee in the country. Harvey’s staff of carefully screened single young women—the celebrated Harvey Girls—were the country’s first female workforce and became genuine Americana, even inspiring an MGM musical starring Judy Garland. With the verve and passion of Fred Harvey himself, Stephen Fried tells the story of how this visionary built his business from a single lunch counter into a family empire whose marketing and innovations we still encounter in myriad ways. Inspiring, instructive, and hugely entertaining, Appetite for America is historical biography that is as richly rewarding as a slice of fresh apple pie—and every |

Bruce Aiken’s Grand Canyon: An Intimate Affair $55 “My main idea is to paint scenes that say, ‘I was here. I saw this. This is a first-hand experience.’ Grand Canyon is not only big and beautiful; it’s pristine living. It’s still wild to me.” Artist Bruce Aiken grew in New York City’s Greenwich Village, but he always yearned for the sculpted western landscapes that his mother had told him about. He achieved his dream when he moved into Grand Canyon itself, accepting a job to tend the national park’s water supply. After studying the canyon’s geology, botany, and wildlife, he began to paint its majestic vistas. This large-scale coffee-table pictorial tribute to an awe-inspiring western artist. |

Cowgirl Cuisine $18.52 Who hasn’t fantasized about leaving behind the chaos of everyday life and moving someplace where life is simpler? Well, that’s just what chef and food writer Paula Disbrowe did when she left New York City and moved to Texas. She traded her subway MetroCard for a pickup truck and her stiletto heels for a pair of down-home cowboy boots. In Cowgirl Cuisine, Paula tells her story through food. She weaves together romance, adventure, and more than a few laughs as she celebrates the beauty of flavorful food, fresh air, and her own wholesome recipes, all while taking home cooks on a journey well off the beaten path. Like Texas itself, the recipes in Cowgirl Cuisine are big-hearted and bold whole-grain muffins bursting with berries, salads loaded with leafy herbs and avocado, and fiery bowls of chili. Paula’s food is healthful and full of nutrients, but this is not a diet cookbook cowgirls don’t have time to count calories (besides, they burn it all off hoisting newborn calves, hiking the hills, and galloping off on long trail rides). Instead, this is food that is satisfying and easy to prepare, which leaves plenty of time for living life to the fullest. From hearty ranch breakfasts to fresh salads, spicy nibbles, seductive desserts, and killer watermelon margaritas, Paula’s recipes are full of her signature zest, spunk, and spice. Start your day off right with Canyon Granola or Cowgirl Migas. For lunch, have a nourishing bowl of silky Roasted Pumpkin Soup with Red Chile Cream or Chicken and Citrus Slaw Tostadas. For dinner, try Gazpacho Risotto with Garlic Shrimp or Cowboy Pot Roast with Coffee and Whiskey. And be sure to save room for one of Paula’sdecadent desserts, such as Chocolate Pecan Squares or Dulce de Leche Flan with Pepita Brittle. In addition to her recipes, Paula includes humorous and heartfelt vignettes about wild animals on the loose, scorpions in the sheets, and Casanova cowboys. And the pages are filled with lush photog |

Dancing Alone in Mexico: From the Border to Baja and Beyond $8.56 Can a man have a love affair with a foreign land? Ron Butler never dreamed Mexico would capture his heart and his soul. But when his ex-wife moved to Guadalajara with their children in the wake of divorce, he found himself crisscrossing the country, seduced by its charms and moved by its rhythms and its melodies.Like the diver of an old Mexican legend who lives beneath the sea seeking the best pearl, Butler lost himself in Mexico and found the hidden treasures of every tiny hamlet and big metropolis. He writes about the endangered monarch butterflies of El Rosario, the street bands of Zacatecas, and the mummies of Guanajuato. He takes a magical night ferry ride from Mazatlan and a train excursion into Copper Canyon — a chasm four times larger than the Grand Canyon — in Mexico’s most mysterious mountains. He goes off the beaten path in such tourist havens as Acapulco and Cancun. And he walks in the footsteps of movie stars and artists who too have been enamored of Mexico.Poking into the nooks and crannies of Mexico, Butler indulges in tasty Mexican specialties at both the finest restaurants and out-of-the-way street stands. He finds the best tequila in the town named Tequila, the world’s most delicious cup of coffee in Veracruz, the sweetest dulce in Morelia, and the best mole — a Mayan chile and chocolate sauce embellished by nuns anxious to please a visiting Spanish viceroy — in Puebla. Sharing his considerable knowledge of art, Butler also uncovers the best of Mexico’s museums and advises shoppers about folk crafts.Informative and helpful as the best travel guide, Dancing Alone in Mexico will help even seasoned travelers to get the most out of their trips to Mexico.Casual and lively as the best travel memoir, the book will also delight the armchair traveler with south-of-the-border stories and adventures that come only to those who dance not alone but with an entire land. |

Background Activeweave’s original positioning, through the Stickis service, revolves around and extends the notion of social annotation for web sites. Web annotations were pioneered in 1999 by the company Third Voice, with a service allowing its users to: Lacking a filtering mechanism that would have allowed users to pick whose annotations they would see, Third Voice was perceived as intrusive, spam-like graffiti , and consequently was fought by site owners , and largely ignored by users overwhelmed by the amount of public commentary on popular sites. It shut down in 2001 . One of Activeweave’s significant departures from Third Voice’s approach was to base the sharing and visibility of annotations on an underlying social network . Activeweave also innovated in terms of user experience by ensuring annotations were displayed in an unobtrusive manner, not interfering with the visited sites: Subsequently, Activeweave released BlogRovR , that built on the same technology but made the system read-only, with annotations being supplied implicitly by blog posts relevant to the web page being viewed by users. Natural Environments of Arizona: From Desert to Mountains $19.95 Best known for its cactus-studded deserts and the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon, Arizona boasts even more natural features that surprise visitors and continue to amaze longtime residents. Using C. H. Merriam’s turn-of-the-twentieth-century descriptions of Arizona’s life zones, Charles Lowe first defined those biotic communities in his 1964 book Arizona’s Natural Environment. Now ten experts on Arizona’s natural setting build on that classic to reflect our increased knowledge of basic physical and biological processes and the impact of both natural and man-made disturbances on these environments. Natural Environments of Arizona bridges the gap between coffee-table volumes and scientific literature, offering a nontechnical, single-volume overview that introduces readers to a myriad of topics and provides pointers toward deeper reading. It’s all here: climate, geology, soil and water resources, an amazing variety of flora and fauna—and of course human impacts on the state’s fragile ecosystems. These chapters show the extent to which Arizona’s natural environments have changed since Lowe first set the stage for their study. They consider changes in forests and grasslands, the effects of soil erosion, questions about water quality, and the evolving status of rivers and wildlife communities. And while the common thread of environments makes the book a complete introduction to the subject, each chapter stands alone as an authoritative synopsis of its particular topic. Ranging widely over the impacts of drought, floods, and wildfires, this practical guide clearly shows that nature is more than picturesque landscapes, vegetation, and wildlife. For anyone with a dog-eared copy of Lowe, this book will serve as the new standard on the subject—a valuable tool for resource managers, students, and general readers alike. |

Natural Visions: The Power of Images in American Environmental Reform $42.5 Walden Pond. The Grand Canyon. Yosemite National Park. Throughout the twentieth century, photographers and filmmakers created unforgettable images of these and other American natural treasures. Many of these images continue to occupy a prominent place in the American imagination. Making these representations, though, was more than a purely aesthetic project. In fact, portraying majestic scenes and threatened places galvanized concern for the environment and its protection. Natural Visions documents through images the history of environmental reform from the Progressive era to the first Earth Day celebration in 1970, showing the crucial role the camera played in the development of the conservation movement.                     In Natural Visions, Finis Dunaway tells the story of how visual imagery—such as wilderness photographs, New Deal documentary films, and Sierra Club coffee table books—shaped modern perceptions of the natural world. By examining the relationship between the camera and environmental politics through detailed studies of key artists and activists, Dunaway captures the emotional and spiritual meaning that became associated with the American landscape. Throughout the book, he reveals how photographers and filmmakers adapted longstanding traditions in American culture—the Puritan jeremiad, the romantic sublime, and the frontier myth—to literally picture nature as a place of grace for the individual and the nation. Beautifully illustrated with photographs by Ansel Adams, Eliot Porter, and a host of other artists, Natural Visions will appeal to a wide range of readers interested in American cultural history, the visual arts, and environmentalism.  |

Skeleton Man (Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee Series #17) $2 Since his retirement from the Navajo Tribal Police, former lieutenant Joe Leaphorn is running out of stories to tell at the weekly coffee klatches with his buddies. That is until he gets sucked into helping investigate what at first seems to be a simple trading post robbery. The simple-minded kid nailed for the crime is related to a former colleague of Joe’s, and he needs help. Sergeant Jim Chee and his fiancé Bernie are also on the case, which turns into a search for the remains of a passenger on one of the planes that went down into the Grand Canyon 50 years ago. That passenger happened to have handcuffed to his wrist an attaché case filled with a fortune in diamonds – one of which turned up in the robbery. Lots of bad guys are looking for the gems, and it’s a race to the finish during a monsoon in the canyon to see who will survive and who will be brought to justice. |

Somewhere During the Spin Cycle $14 The subjects and settings of Joseph Mills’ poems range from Laundromats, groceries, and coffee shops, to cemeteries, the stars over the Grand Canyon, and even Purgatory, which is seen as a combination dry cleaner/car wash. These poems, which deal mainly with traveling and motion, explore the simple encounters that can suggest the complexity of human interactions. In everyday language, the narrator considers topics such as how difficult it can be to find a poem to read at a wedding, what happens when a person drives non-stop from Salt Lake to Chicago, and why it would be convenient if people wore labels like wine bottles, so we would have a better idea/who might improve with age/and who we should enjoy now. |

The book has been highly recommended by independent book reviewers and has been praised by many individuals, young and old.”It’s better than the syndicated comic strips in the newspapers.” – Al T., age 68″ ‘Carl and Ben…and Beeky’…will become a long-lived classic like ‘The Far Side’ and ‘Peanuts.’ ” – Eric O., age 12″I’ve read the book about 15 times already. Woodward Canyon 2007 Columbia Valley Merlot – Red Wine $39.99 Red Wine by Woodward Canyon from Columbia Valley, Washington. This Merlot was pumped over and punched down by hand two times per day in small stainless steel tanks. After pressing, settling and racking the various lots were moved to French barrels for aging and maturation. In the spring of 2009 following final racking, the wine was assembled and bottled and laid down in our cellars for additional development. The wine shows extraordinary complexity yet is softer and more elegant than several more recent vintages. Blending of fruit from such fantastic vineyards has produced a complex flavor profile of generous cherry, oak, spice and coffee; I pick up notes of toasted coconut and vanilla in the aroma. Rich fruit and fully mature tannins give this wine softness for drinking now yet with the proportion and structure to age well for six years or more. |
