A Practical Treatise On Materia Medica And Therapeutics (1899) $54.29 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:stomach. We learn, also, that appetite, hunger, etc., contribute no element to the process, but serve merely as a reminder that the time for taking food has come. It follows, also, from the foregoing considerations, that Debove’s powder, or similar aliment, may be administered as a medicament, and that the nutrition will be as favorably affected by it as various morbid states are by an involuntary medication. BEVERAGES. Coffee.— The seed of Caffea Arabica ; cafe, Fr. ; Kaffee, Ger. Composition.—Coffee contains an alkaloid — caffeine — which is nearly, if not quite, identical with theine, a principle found in tea; a volatile oil ; a form of tannic acid ; sugar, gum, etc. The tannic acid is that variety known as caffeo-tannic, or caffeic. The peculiar odor and flavor of roasted coffee are due to the caffeic acid, which is, in part, converted into methylamine ; to the aromatic oil; doubtless, also, to the sugar, which is changed into caramel. Preparations.—Coffee is never used in the raw state as a beverage. After roasting, it is made into an infusion or decoction. An infusion made at a low temperature, which should not exceed 200 Fahr., is better than a decoction. If the heat be too great, those aromatic constituents which impart to coffee its special aroma, are dissipated. Coffee is now usually prepared by the process of percolation. The best product is obtained by steeping the coffee for some time in hot water. Coffee can be ” settled,” or clarified, by the addition of some white of egg, or isinglass, or by pouring on from a height some cold water. Tea.— The dried leaves of Camellia Thea ; the, Fr. ; Thee, Ger. Composition.—The constituents of tea are very much the same as those of coffee : theine ; an aromatic oil ; sugar and gum, |

Alcohol and Coffee Use in the Aging $149.95 As we age, our physiology changes. Also, we tend to place less emphasis on proper nutrition. The more elderly we grow, the less resistant we become to major diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Chronic exposure to these substances bring devastating consequences to bear on the elderly and often lead to their premature death. Alcohol and Coffee Use in the Aging provides a detailed discussion of how alcohol affects the elderly, particularly in regard to the major health problems it causes. The book also examines the many physiological and cognitive changes that alcohol brings about. This book also addresses the role and effects of caffeine as a major factor contributing to insomnia in the elderly, as well as its association with hypertension and cancer. |

An Unashamed Defense Of Coffee $9.99 The first coffee of the day is a make-or-break moment. A robust, flavorful cup can clear the mind, cheer the soul, and boost self-confidence. A watery, bitter brew almost guarantees gloom. More than one billion people start their day by drinking a cup of coffee, making it the most popular drink worldwide, after water, and the coffee industry second in the worldwide economy, after oil. However, most people still consider coffee a guilty pleasure. One reason is that many think coffee contains only caffeine and is detrimental to health. In fact, coffee is far more than caffeine-it contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds that can affect health positively, such as antioxidants, minerals, niacin, and lactones. This book debunks the myths surrounding coffee and proves that coffee in moderation can actually prevent many diseases. Extensive research has been conducted in the last twenty years, but the findings have been relegated to highly specialized journals which are inaccessible to most readers. Now, coffee drinkers rejoice-this book articulates the massive body of research that’s been done in a way that everyone can understand and enjoy! Coffee has been and continues to be an important part of human history-economically, physiologically, and socially. It is the favorite drink of many celebrities and innovators, such as Britney Spears, Halle Berry, Jennifer Jones, Bill Gates, Robin Williams, Kevin Spacey, Jon Stewart, Dave Chapelle, and Madonna, as well as numerous historical figures, like Benjamin Franklin, Napoleon, Lord Byron, Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, Voltaire, Casanova, Goethe, Hemingway, Picasso, Balzac, and Wyatt Earp. There are lots of reasons to drink coffee every day, as the millions of customers who flock to coffeehouses to order a “special,” double espresso or latte will attest. Wake up, smell and read all about coffee. 101 Reasons to Drink Coffee without Guilt provides an accessible, engaging, and illuminating exploration of this beloved beverage. |
